The Summerjam is one of the biggest reggae - festival in Europe. It has been held annually on the first and second weekend in July since 1986. Every year a large number of artists from the worldwide reggae and dance hall scene perform under a changing motto .
history
The Summerjam was first held as a one-day festival in 1986 on the Loreley open-air stage near Sankt Goarshausen ; the headliners at the time were Dennis Brown , Black Uhuru and The Wailers . Due to the steadily increasing number of visitors and the limited space available, the festival had to take place at a different venue from 1994, after eight years on the Loreley. The site of the Wildenrath Airfield , a former military airfield in Wegberg, was used as a temporary measure. Due to criticism from festival visitors that the area was not suitable for a reggae festival, a new venue was quickly sought. This was found with the Fühlinger See in the north of the city of Cologne , where the Summerjam has been attracting up to 30,000 reggae fans from all over the world every year since 1996. In addition, some concert recordings have been broadcast in the WDR - Rockpalast since 2009 .
While the festival was initially a pure reggae festival with artists mainly from Africa and the Caribbean, over the years the organizers have allowed new artists from the musical styles that have emerged from them worldwide, and the mixture of internationally known headliners and young musicians is still characteristic.

The festival site itself is located on an island that can be reached via three access bridges. In addition to the two stages that the artists play on at the same time, there is also a large bazaar as well as snack and drink stands. Until 2010 there was also a dancehall area on the actual festival site, but this was relocated to the camping site in the immediate vicinity of the festival island in 2011 due to a larger space available. The dancehall area has been back on the festival site since 2019.

The camping area is located around the festival island and the entire Fühlinger See. There is also a special area for mobile homes and a family-friendly camping area.
