Midnite was a roots reggae band from Saint Croix , US Virgin Islands , formed in 1989 by brothers Vaughn and Ron Benjamin.

The band's music is strongly based on the roots reggae of the 1970s. Likewise, the band adheres to topics of the Rastafarian movement in their texts and deals with topics ranging from current politics and economics to the practice of Rastafari religion.

Band history

The band's debut album Unpolished was recorded in 1997 in Washington, DC . Also in Washington, the most famous album of the band Ras Mek Peace was recorded in 1999 under the simplest conditions with only two microphones and was mixed without major technical measures. Despite these simple conditions, the album has a very good sound quality. At the end of the 1990s the band returned to St. Croix to work in their own studio, African Roots Lab. In the next few years some of his own publications and publications with other artists, both international and local from the Virgin Islands, followed. The result of this work can be found on the 2002 album Jubilees of Zion . Among other things, it deals with the cultural resistance against Babylon ; In the Rastafarian movement, Babylon is understood as a synonym for a materialistic and bad society or, more specifically, the western world to which the Africans were deported. The band's fourth album Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance was also released in 2002 on the band's label. Further publications followed and continue to this day. Midnite is also a popular live band and can often be found in the program of the major reggae festivals.

In September 2011 the band released their first professionally produced music video for the song Mongst I&I . It shows the members of the band in different constellations and in different places like Frederiksted , the American Virgin Islands or Kingston .
