Shabba ranks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shabba Ranks , actually Rexton Rawlston Fernando Gordon (born January 17, 1966 in Sturgetown , Jamaica ), is a Jamaican dancehall - deejay . He is the first dancehall artist to win a Grammy and is one of the world's most famous musicians in Jamaica.

Life

Shabba Ranks grew up in Trenchtown , where he began working as a deejay on the Roots-Melody sound system when he was twelve . There he recorded his first single , Heat Under Sufferer's Feet , under the name of co-pilot, through which Josey Wales became aware of him. He introduced Shabba Ranks to King Jammy , who produced some of Shabba Ranks singles. Shabba later switched to producer Bobby Digital's Digital B label . During his time at Digital B, he had his first successes in Great Britain , among other things through a cooperation with Scritti Politti . In 1991 he signed with Epic Records and released the album As Raw as Ever , which won the 1992 Grammy for Best Reggae Recording . In the same year he also released the song Dem Bow (album Just Reality ), the rhythm of which greatly influenced the reggaeton movement.

He won another Grammy in 1993 with his second album X-Tra Naked . Two collections of hits from his Jamaican time also entered the charts. The third album A Mi Shabba contained some successful tunes like Shine Eye Gal , but fell short of expectations. That led to the end of the collaboration with Epic in 1996. Since then Shabba Ranks has recorded a few songs for Jamaican producers, especially King Jammy.

In his career, Shabba Ranks has also worked with Maxi Priest , Johnny Gill , Chuck Berry , Eddie Murphy , KRS-One , Busta Rhymes , P. Diddy , Mykal Rose and Cocoa Tea , among others .

Controversy over homophobia

Like many other dancehall artists, Shabba Ranks came under criticism for homophobic texts, so-called Battyman tunes , and views. In 1992 he called for the crucifixion of homosexuals on a British television program . He later took these statements back under pressure from his label, but this led to a loss of popularity in Jamaica. There he was accused of inconsistency.
