Battyman tune

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Battyman tunes are reggae or dancehall songs in which derogatory expressions are used for homosexual men and in some cases openly calling for violence against them. Homosexual women are rarely the subject of the texts. The term Battyman has English roots and mostly returned to British English via immigrants.

etymology

The expression batty man or bati man and batty boy (also spoken and sometimes written bhatti boy , batty bwoy ) come from the Jamaican Creole , a Jamaican Creole language with English roots. Batty is a variation of the English word bottom ( buttocks ). Batty boy is a word equation for the butt boy ("ass boy", ass creeper or ass (ge) fick (t) er) from American English and denotes a homosexual , bisexual or effeminate man or a man presumably predisposed to this.

In British English there is the equivalent bum boy ("Popo-Junge", Po (ge) fick (t) er). The term Batty came to the United Kingdom through Jamaican immigrants . Batty (ass), batty boy ("ass boy") and batty hole (asshole) are used, among others, by the fictional English gangsta rapper Ali G , portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen , who parodic British culture with this Pakistani character and portrayed Caribbean immigrants. But the American rapper MF DOOM also made fun of the latent homosexuality of Batman and Robin in the song Batty Boyz from the 2009 album Born Like This .

Another, comparable Jamaican swear word is chi chi boy or chi chi man . The origin lies in the French adjective chichi , which means among other things " affected behavior" and "luxury, vulgar gloss, presumptuous". Between 1905 and 1910, chichi came into the English language. Here it has the meanings "very chic, elegant" and "affected, ostentatious, effeminate". A German equivalent for chi chi man would be something like the queen .

Tune describes a melody or a song in English.

background

The best-known example of a Battyman tune is Boom Bye Bye by Buju Banton from 1992, which calls for the "execution" of homosexual men. Banton later defended his song on the grounds that it was directed exclusively against homosexual child abusers .

Other well-known homophobic reggae and dancehall singers are Sizzla , Elephant Man , Shabba Ranks , Vybz Kartel , Bounty Killer and Capleton . A few songs are also directed against lesbians.

Homophobia and physical violence against gays is widespread in Jamaica . Many artists have accordingly homophobic lyrics in their songs. Examples of this include TOK or Anthony B. The Jamaica Labor Party used TOK's song Chi Chi man as a theme song in the 2001 election campaign , which celebrates the burning and murder of gays.

Some Jamaican singers, like Capleton, justify their statements by saying that they should not be taken literally and that they should not be taken to burn people or things. This “fire” is not a real fire, but a spiritual fire that should purify the soul; a concept that would also appear in biblical texts.

Opposing positions and distancing

In The Reggae Compassionate Act in 2007, many well-known reggae and dancehall singers signed a declaration of intent not to use homophobic lyrics anymore. Well-known German artists of this genre, such as Irie Révoltés , Raggabund or Silly Walks Movement , expressly distance themselves from intolerance towards homosexual people and condemn these texts as "hate propaganda". The Bavarian brass band LaBrassBanda played their song I like da Battyman (batty me banana) (also known as I like the Battyman (batty me banana)) in response to some of the artists performing at the Chiemsee Reggae Summer 2009 in their hometown .
