The Chiemsee Summer (CS) was an open air - Festival , which annually in August in overseas of South Lake Chiemsee was organized. In terms of style, the international music program ranged between rock, hip-hop and electro and attracted around 35,000 visitors every year. The event has been on hold since 2018 due to the lack of a concept. It is unclear when a new edition will take place.

history

The first event of its predecessor Chiemsee Reggae Summer took place on July 8, 1995. In the first two years the festival was limited to one day, from 1996 the festival was extended to two days due to increased demand. In 2001 the festival was extended by a further day and has since taken place on an August weekend instead of July. On the main stage, the artists perform in the open air (open air). A tent stage has also been set up since 1999. In 2006 there was a third stage, the Coke DJ tent, where DJs and sound systems performed.

Shuttle buses connect the Übersee train station with the festival site and Lake Chiemsee. The campsite is designed for around 15,000 people, the parking lot for around 13,000 cars.

In 2008 the previous festival Chiemsee Rocks was founded. The festival has been called Chiemsee Summer since 2014 and is set to last for five days. The two previous events Chiemsee Reggae Summer and Chiemsee Rocks were combined in it . The additional offer of electrical and techno artists is new. For this purpose, a cooperation with the Munich techno club Harry Klein was achieved. As of 2017, there are virtually no reggae artists in the line-up. The festival has thus de facto separated from the style of the previous event, Chiemsee Reggae Summer.

Criticism of the Chiemsee Reggae Summer

Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen criticize the Chiemsee Reggae Summer, as the organizers booked the controversial artist Sizzla , who was described as homophobic by critics like the Greens, in 2010 . Due to the criticism about the booking of the singer for the 16th edition of the Chiemsee Reggae Summer, the organizer published a second press release, which deals with this topic again. In this they distanced themselves from homophobia and homophobic texts and criticized the Green politician Volker Beck . This, according to the organizers, continues to distribute translations of songs by the artist that were published many years ago, which are completely out of context and cannot be transferred 1: 1 from the Jamaican patois .

On Wednesday, August 25, 2010 the organizer announced on the festival website that a performance by the artist Sizzla had to be canceled for security reasons, as radical left groups could be expected to riot.

The RABATZ alliance criticized Capleton's appearance at the festival, which was planned for 2011, and called for “decentralized, creative actions” in the event that it did happen.

Chiemsee Rocks

From 2008 until the merger, the Chiemsee Rocks festival took place on the site two days before the Chiemsee Reggae Summer . In contrast to the Chiemsee Reggae Summer, mainly bands of the rock genre performed here:

The journey there and back with Deutsche Bahn from Bavaria , Baden-Württemberg , Hesse , Thuringia and Saxony has been included in the combined ticket for the past few years . In 2010 the contract between the organizer and Deutsche Bahn expired. An extension of this contract for 2010 and 2011 was decided on May 27, 2010. With the Superticket, the journey by train to Chiemsee Rocks on August 25th was included.
