Dune
Dune (English for dune ), also Dune cycles, is a related series of science fiction novels by Frank Herbert and at the same time the original title of the first volume (German title Der Wüstenplanet ). With the book Der Wüstenplanet Herbert won the first Nebula Award in 1966 and the Hugo Award in the same year , each in the category of best novel . By his death in 1986, the book had sold more than twelve million times.
Dune is also one of the names of the desert planet Arrakis , on which the spice (known as a spice or melange in German) is obtained under harsh conditions . The characteristics of the Spice make it possible to foresee the future. This is used by the navigators to control the spaceships with which humanity moves between the habitable planets. You recognize the consequences of different course dates and can thus choose the course that leads exactly to the goal. Computers and robots with artificial intelligence are regarded as competition degrading human intelligence at the time in which the book's plot is set and have been banned from society since Butler's jihad .
Frank Herbert's original Wüstenplanet cycle consists of six novels that were published between 1965 and 1985. After the author's death, the cycle was expanded to include two earlier trilogies and a subsequent cycle. The authors of the new series are Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson . The Early Chronicles form a direct introduction. The legends, which were settled about 10,000 years before the Early Chronicles , are a kind of prehistory. The hunters of the desert planet (Hunters of Dune) and the redeemers of the desert planet (Sandworms of Dune) are located after the last book written by Herbert himself and continue the story according to his unfinished manuscripts.
History of origin
The first Dune novels were written by Frank Herbert. After his death, his son Brian Herbert and the writer Kevin J. Anderson continue the series.
Frank Herbert
The idea for Dune came about while researching a program by the US Department of Agriculture to fortify dunes. The resulting sequel stories Dune World and The Prophet of Dune appeared in Astounding in the December 1963 to February 1964 issues and in the January to May 1965 issues.
Frank Herbert published a total of six volumes. The first three volumes are closely related in terms of time and their main characters, see Dune - the first trilogy . The fourth volume has been moved a few thousand years into the future. The last two volumes again form a closely coordinated pair.

Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
During a long hike in Death Valley in 1997, it occurred to Kevin J. Anderson to write more Dune stories, particularly a seventh, final volume. He found Brian Herbert's address and wrote him a letter asking Herbert about his plans for Dune and any notes from his father. A joint phone call was successful and led to Anderson visiting Herbert and the first ideas for the three volumes of the early chronicles. Locations
The main locations of the action are planets. The most important of these is "Arrakis", also called "Dune". For much of the storyline, arrakis is the only source of the spice. Most of the surface is covered by desert, making water extremely precious. Since the desert is roamed by huge "sandworms", the human settlements can only be found on rocky ground. Or they are, like the administrative headquarters of the ruling families ("Arrakis City" / "Arrakeen", previously "Carthag"), enclosed by a shield wall made of mountains. Scattered in the desert are "Sietchs", settlements of the indigenous tribes of the "Fremen". Through human intervention, Arrakis is terraformed into a world with forests and oceans , then again into a desert world and finally uninhabitable.

The legends
The legends play out about 10,000 years before the main plot. Many planets of mankind, including the earth , are subjugated by the artificial intelligence Omnius . This came about while a group of people who called themselves titans wanted to forcibly tear humanity out of its lethargy. The attempt of the Omnius to conquer the League of Nobles called the Association of Human Planets, ultimately leads to the annihilation of all artificial intelligences in Butler's Jihad .
At the same time, all the structures that will form the social order 10,000 years later are developing.
The early chronicles
The early chronicles take place a few years before the main plot.
First cycle
The first three novels (first cycle) of the original series are designed as a unified complete work. The plot of the novels is set in time in an indefinite distant future. The reference date is the official founding of the spaceman guild, the action begins in 10190 AC (= after the guild was founded).
Humanity lives in a feudal empire under a padishah - imperator and planetary prince on a variety of planetary systems. The navigators of the spacemen's guild ensure the only fast connection between the worlds of the empire. The technicians from planet Ix and the order of the Bene Gesserit , which consists exclusively of women, represent other important power groups. The Dune saga unfolds in the conflict between the royal houses of the Atreides (after the legendary Greek ancestor Atreus ) and the Harkonnen for control of the desert planet Arrakis , called Dune by the local Fremen . Only on Arrakis can the drug melange (in German 'mixture'), also known as spice (German 'spice'), be collected. The melange is of fundamental importance for the entire empire. Melange enables the guild navigators to use clairvoyant skills to safely steer superluminal spaceships through hyperspace . God Emperor
The fourth novel in the series takes place 3500 years after Leto II , the son of Paul Atreides (Muad'Dib) came to power. The reader learns that Leto has entered into a symbiosis with the sandworm, as otherwise humanity would have perished according to his vision.
The importance of religion is an important theme of this novel. Leto appears godlike, omniscient, and knows both the past and the future. Although his body has changed grotesquely into the worm-like and only his face has remained that of a human being, he is worshiped by a fanatical church. Without it becoming clear to those involved, Leto plans his own death in order to free the humanity he has put in chains. The novel ends with Leto's death and the beginning of the diaspora, the departure of people into the unpopulated expanse of the universe. Leto's rescue plan has succeeded. Meanwhile, humanity is spread across too many planets to be exterminated or to exterminate itself. The guarantee that mankind will never again have to suffer the dictatorship of a visionary god emperor is provided by the genetically mutated descendants of Siona Atreides and Duncan Idaho. Second cycle
The fifth and sixth novels in the original series again form a unit of content. Frank Herbert could no longer complete the planned closing volume.
The novels are moved another 6,500 years into the future. Humanity has made technical, biological and psychological advances. The central themes of the previous novels, the survival of humanity and the question of human nature , are still acute.
The known universe is no longer ruled by an emperor, independent groups (Bene Gesserit, Bene Tleilax, Ix) struggle for supremacy. Dune has been considered one of the best SF novels of all time and enjoys cult status since its publication . There are several reasons for this. Herbert broke through the then common scheme of the genre , which was based on action-packed adventures, peppered with more or less imaginative descriptions of scientifically based phenomena. Instead, he described an entire civilizational universe down to the smallest details of daily life and extrapolated global events and developments of his time into a distant future. The non-filming of Jacobs
In the early 1970s, the producer Arthur P. Jacobs was negotiating with Frank Herbert about the filming rights. Inspired by his success with the first “ Planet of the Apes ” film, he looked for other worthwhile science fiction motifs. David Lean and Franklin J. Schaffner were discussed as directors . The non-filming of Jodorowsky
The French author, publisher and producer Michel Seydoux then acquired the filming rights and worked with the director and author Alejandro Jodorowsky and the support of the comic artist Moebius to develop a detailed storyboard / screenplay, which he offered to many production companies in Hollywood. But they shied away from investing in the very experimental adaptation, despite the illustrious cast, who had already been enthusiastic about the psychedelic film project by Seydoux and Jodorowsky: David Carradine as Duke Leto , Charlotte Rampling as Lady Jessica , Orson Welles as Baron Harkonnen and Gloria Swanson as Gaius Helen Mohiam . In 1978 Dino De Laurentiis bought the rights. Its director Ridley Scott didn't want to do a big project after his brother's death. That's why he ended the project to shoot Blade Runner after seven months .
The first film adaptation by David Lynch

De Laurentiis made another attempt in 1981 after renewing the rights to the first book and acquiring those for sequels. He hired David Lynch , who turned down directing Return of the Jedi for it. Lynch signed for two sequels, but did not have the rights to the Final Cut . For sales reasons, the film should have a low age rating and not be as surreal as Lynch's debut directing Eraserhead .
In 1984 the first film adaptation of the novel was finally released with The Desert Planet . For commercial considerations of the producers , the rough cut was shortened from five hours to two hours 17 minutes instead of the targeted three hours . The film grossed $ 31 million, less than the $ 40 million budget. Roger Ebert gave the film one of four stars and explained:
"This movie is a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless excursion into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of all time."
Lynch later stated that Dune was not the movie he would have made if he had been in full control. "It's a bit sad," said Lynch during a question and answer session at the opening of his art exhibition in London. He had to delete some of the most interesting scenes from the script because he was not given enough budget and should have produced numerous effects more cheaply.
Lynch has distanced himself from the 180-minute television version, in which most of the original material was reintegrated, which is why the pseudonym Alan Smithee was used.
The SciFi Channel miniseries
John Harrison adapted the material of the first book in 2000 as " Dune - The Desert Planet " for the American SciFi Channel . The miniseries won two Emmy Awards (for cinematography and visual effects ) and was nominated for a third ( sound editing ). The remake of Villeneuves
The rights were acquired in 2016 by Legendary Pictures , who announced in 2017 that Denis Villeneuve would direct. The film is slated to hit US theaters on December 18, 2020. Several bands named themselves after terms from the Dune cycles. The US metal core band Shai Hulud is named after the desert planet 's sandworms of the same name . The German producer Oliver Froning founded the dance project Dune together with the producers Jens Oettrich and Bernd Burhoff . The British heavy metal band Iron Maiden processed the Dune material in the song To Tame A Land , released in 1983 on the album Piece of Mind . The song was originally supposed to be called "Dune". Dune II
Also in 1992 was Dune II - Battle for Arrakis by Westwood Studios . One of the first known real-time strategy games .
Westwood's publisher Virgin Interactive drew her attention to Dune. Brett Sperry, one of the two founders, was also a fan of the series.

In 2001, Emperor: Battle for Dune by Westwood Studios and Frank Herbert's Dune by Cryo Interactive Entertainment were released. The latter is a 3D action game based on the three-part TV miniseries. Comic adaptations
In 1984 the American Marvel publishing company published the special volume Marvel Super Special 36 in which David Lynch's film was adapted as a comic. In 2017, Brian Herbert announced that he and Kevin Anderson were working on a new adaptation. In addition, there is a two-volume encyclopedia Der Wüstenplanet (Authorized Guide) The Dune Encyclopedia by Frank Herbert and Willis E. McNelly. The last edition is from October 1999 and the books have long been out of print. Frank Herbert writes in the foreword that he himself did not follow this encyclopedia for his subsequent volumes, which originally appeared in English to match volume 2. Thus there are sometimes considerable differences in content. On the other hand, the contents of the encyclopedia were later used by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson for the other books.
Audio books
From 1978 onwards, four long-playing records with excerpts from the novels were released by Caedmon Records , read by Herbert himself:

The record covers were designed by John Schoenherr .
In 2008 an unabridged audio book version ( ISBN 978-3-7857-5215-9 ) was published by Lübbe Audio. Also present: Jürgen Prochnow , Marianne Rosenberg , Simon Jäger .
From 2007 onwards, the first 6 volumes of the Dune series were published as unabridged audio books by Amazon Hörverlag Audible in German and English. In English, not only the complete original cycle by Frank Herbert was processed, but also the later works.
