Black Clouds & Silver Linings (English for: " Black clouds and silver stripes ") is the tenth studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater . The album was released in Europe on June 19, 2009 and in America on June 23. After Systematic Chaos, which wasreleased in 2007, it isthe second dream theater album to be released on Roadrunner Records and the last with Mike Portnoy.

This album was produced by drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci , the mixing was done by Paul Northfield.

Dream Theater began work on the album in October 2008. In November 2008, Mike Portnoy described Black Clouds & Silver Linings as "a (Dream Theater) album with" A Change of Seasons "," Octavarium "," Learning to Live ", "Pull Me Under" and "The Glass Prison" ... all on one album. "

According to Portnoy, the song "The Shattered Fortress" marks the end of the " Alcoholics Anonymous Suite ", in which Portnoy lyrically describes his experiences with alcohol addiction and Alcoholics Anonymous. Portnoy also wrote the lyrics for the song "The Best of Times", which is about his father, who passed away in January 2009. The rest of the lyrics were all written by John Petrucci.

The cover was again designed by Hugh Syme , according to Portnoy .

Versions

Black Clouds & Silver Linings is available in three different versions. On the one hand in a standard version, which is also available as a vinyl LP , each containing the six album tracks. There is also a "3-Disc Special Edition", which also includes the album in an instrumental version. The third CD is a cover album with pieces that were originally recorded by other artists. There was also another limited “Deluxe Collector's Edition” which, in addition to the “3-Disc Special Edition” contained therein, contains the album again on two vinyl LPs. This collector's edition also includes a mousepad, lithographs with the artwork and a DVD on which each individual instrument part is located separately. 100 meet-and-greet cards and 100 signed lithographs by Hugh Syme were randomly distributed on these copies .

tour

In mid-June 2009 the tour to support the album in Europe started. The second Progressive Nation Tour started in July / August , together with Zappa Plays Zappa . As part of the line-up, Pain of Salvation and Beardfish were also planned, but they had to withdraw their participation at short notice due to the bankruptcy of their label. They were replaced by Bigelf and Scale the Summit . In addition, the Progressive Nation concert series took place in Europe for the first time in October / November.
