Train of Thought ( English for " train of thought") is the seventh studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater , which was released in November 2003.

Music genre

The band intended, influenced by the heavy metal - covers that Dream Theater during their previous world tour played to take a hard and loud metal album. She played the complete albums Master of Puppets by Metallica and The Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden, among others . Train of Thought is considered by many fans of Dream Theater to be the heaviest album the band had produced until then. For this reason, many speak of the band's heavy metal album.

particularities

  • The album was written in just three weeks and was the band's fastest-written album until the release of Distance Over Time in 2019.
  • Mike Portnoy wrote the song "Honor Thy Father" about his stepfather. When asked what made him write this song, Portnoy replied in an internet relay chat that he was not good at writing a love song and therefore wrote a "hate song".
  • There are some obvious connections between Train of Thought and the previous and following Dream Theater albums:
    • The album has seven songs and it is the band's seventh studio album. The predecessor, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence , has six songs and the successor, Octavarium , has eight.
    • The first song, "As I Am", starts with the same symphony / orchestra sound that ends the last song of Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence .
    • "This Dying Soul" is part of Mike Portnoy's "Alcoholics Anonymous" series , which tells of his previous alcohol addiction and experiences with Alcoholics Anonymous. The series begins with the song "The Glass Prison" by Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence , the last song being "The Shattered Fortress" by Black Clouds & Silver Linings .
  • “Stream of Consciousness” is the longest instrumental piece on a Dream Theater studio album. Stream Of Consciousness was also the originally intended title for Falling into Infinity .
  • In the version of “As I Am” that is on the compilation Greatest Hit (… And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs) , the word “ Fuck ” has been removed from the second verse.
