Kevin James LaBrie (born May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene , Canada ) is the singer of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater .

Life

James LaBrie was born on May 5, 1963 in Penetanguishene, Canada. Even as a little boy he sang over and over again the songs that were playing on the radio . From the age of five he began to play the drums . Even then it was found that he had a very well-developed singing voice for a child. As a result, his singing talent was particularly encouraged during his school days. In addition, he already supported his father's vocal group.

From the beginning of his youth, LaBrie became interested in rock music . At that time he already played drums in several bands, but after a while he realized that he had more talent as a singer and accordingly took over the vocal part in the respective bands.

At the age of 21 he completed classical singing training under the renowned singing teacher Rosemary Patricia Burns . Shortly afterwards he took over the vocal part in the then very famous Canadian rock band Winter Rose .

Pierre Paradis , the manager of the band Voivod made him the early 90s as part of his first solo project on the American band Dream Theater from the room New York aware that after the dismissal of their former singer Charlie Dominici would look for a successor urgently. LaBrie did not hesitate and sent a corresponding recording of his skills to New York. Shortly afterwards, LaBrie was invited to audition. There he convinced immediately and became the new singer of the band Dream Theater.

Membership in Dream Theater

Since joining Dream Theater, he has only appeared in public under his middle name, James, as there was already a member named Kevin, Kevin Moore , when he joined Dream Theater , and through John Myung and John Petrucci enough confusion has already taken place. Keyboardist Kevin Moore has not been a member of Dream Theater since 1994. Still, LaBrie kept his stage name . LaBrie can be heard for the first time on the band's second studio album, Images and Words , which should also be the absolute breakthrough for the band.

James LaBrie is one of the most famous singers in Progressive Metal today. However, his singing style is slightly controversial, especially among fans of Dream Theater. In particular, his tendency to so-called "pressing" often meets with criticism. According to his own account, he contracted chronic inflammation of the vocal cords as a result of food poisoning while on vacation in Cuba in late 1994 , which bothered him for almost eight years. In an interview that he gave during his solo tour in 2005, he described the circumstances again very precisely: After a long "dark period", LaBrie felt the first signs of his return in October and November 2002 during the World Tourbulence tour Voice. After the end of the World Tourbulence Tour he resumed his singing studies and completely changed his technique with his new singing teacher Victoria Thompson.

LaBrie had already released two solo albums with Keep It To Yourself and 2 solo albums in 1999 and 2001, but for legal reasons under the pseudonym "Mullmuzzler". In spring 2005 his third solo album, Elements of Persuasion , was finally released , the first under his own name. In September 2010, the successor, Static Impulse, followed , on which unusually tough paths were taken with guest vocals by drummer Peter Wildoer .

In addition, LaBrie has lent his singing voice to a number of music projects. For example, he worked on tribute samplers for the bands Rush and Queen . For Henning Pauly and his Frameshift project , he took over all of the vocal parts on the 2003 album Unweaving the Rainbow , a concept album about the teachings of the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins . He was also featured on three tracks on Pauly's 2006 album Babysteps . LaBrie made his most famous guest contribution with his participation in the Ayreon project of the Dutch musician Arjen Lucassen : On "The Human Equation" (2004) he sang the role of the main character, a man who is in a coma after a mysterious car accident. This work was performed live in 2015 as a play under the title "The Theater Equation" and released on CD / DVD. LaBrie also took on the lead role here. Most recently, LaBrie took part in the True Symphonic Rockestra project , a "Classic meets Rock" homage to The Three Tenors in collaboration with Vladimir Grishko and Thomas Dewald . From this collaboration, the album Concerto in True Minor was released in 2008 .

On July 29, 2013 the solo album Impermanent Resonance was released , which was produced by Jens Bogren (among others Symphony X , Katatonia , Amon Amarth ).
