The Explorers Club

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Explorers Club was founded in New York in 1904 by the world's leading explorers as an exclusive private club, where it is still based today. The aim has always been to support scientific research into land, sea, atmosphere and space. The " terra incognita " in its literal meaning has now practically completely lost its right to exist. In a figurative sense, the term terra incognita still stands for unknown areas of knowledge today. The international and interdisciplinary society promotes field research and expeditions on all continents with various means. The members achieved a number of pioneering achievements: the North Pole, the South Pole, the summit of Mount Everest, the lowest point of the world's oceans and the moon were the first to be reached by club members. The heyday of the club was in the 1920s to 1950s. During this time, safaris and big game hunts were about bringing the unknown into the "old world". Today the ecological orientation of the Explorers Club dominates.

The number of members of the since then multidisciplinary Explorers Club is currently around 3,000. The former men's club has now opened up to men and women from over 60 countries on all continents. The entry of women was only made possible by an amendment to the statutes in 1981. However, it is not possible to simply join the elite Explorers Club; at least two members must vouch for a candidate. He has to prove that he dedicates his life to research.

In the middle of New York's posh Manhattan Upper Eastside, between Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue, the Clubhouse is located at 46 East 70th Street . This is decorated with trophies from previous expeditions. There are also 30 other branches worldwide. The Explorers Club counts among its members the greats of research of the 20th century. Members include people from the fields of polar research , diving , aerospace , archeology , zoology , physics , oceanography , astronomy , ecology , geology , paleontology , mountaineering and speleology . The most famous members include Robert Edwin Peary , Roald Amundsen , Edmund Hillary , Thor Heyerdahl , Catherine Hickson , Chuck Yeager , Jacques Piccard , William Anderson , Neil Armstrong , Ardito Desio , Charles Lindbergh , Dian Fossey , L. Ron Hubbard , Roy Chapman Andrews , Frederick Albion Ober and Edward Moffat Weyer junior . The founder and first president of the Explorers Club was Adolphus Greely .

The club awards awards in various disciplines every year. Among the winners are people like Bertrand Piccard , Reinhold Messner and Victor Vescovo . Furthermore, the company meets for the annual annual dinner , which is open to interested parties for a corresponding entry fee.

The club statutes stipulate that the club flag is hoisted when the expedition destination is reached by a club recognized expedition. Neil Armstrong would have liked to do this on the moon, but for reasons of state it had to be the US flag.

The club magazine The Explorers Journal has been published quarterly since 1921 .
