Ardito Desio

Ardito Desio (born April 18, 1897 in Palmanova , Italy , † December 12, 2001 ) was an Italian explorer , mountaineer , geologist and cartographer .

Desio carried out some geological surveys in Libya from 1926 to 1940 . He and others were the first to find oil in this country. In 1954 he led an expedition which made mountaineers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni the first to climb the K2 on July 31 . In 1990 Desio founded a research station on Mount Everest . He died in 2001 at the age of 104.
