Fates Warning is a US-based Metal - band , which the founders of the Progressive Metal counts. After the band was founded in Connecticut in 1983 , their first album was released in 1984 under the title Night on Bröcken , which was still heavily influenced by traditional heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden .

The debut album was considered to be of little importance, whereas the group's subsequent five albums are considered to be groundbreaking for the development of progressive metal, which is especially true of their releases between 1985 and 1988 with the records The Specter Within (1985), Awaken the Guardian (1986) and No Exit (1988). These albums are characterized by complex and filigree vocal structures that show Eastern influences. In addition there is the professional guitar playing by Matheos and Arduini / Aresti, which is characterized by complex riffs , tempo changes, song-related, but also adapted-virtuoso solos and acoustic passages .

Band history

The band's history can generally be divided into three phases: The first phase is formed by the first three albums on which John Arch sang. During this time, Fates Warning developed their own style based on the “ Iron Maiden-likedebut album . The lyrics on these albums came from the fantasy area and some had occult - philosophical overtones.

The following four or five regular studio albums form the second phase with Ray Alder as the singer. Acoustic elements found their way, the music seems less aggressive overall, the lyrics become increasingly introspective , are about goodbyes, misunderstandings and the search for meaning. This style was already perfected on Perfect Symmetry - the second album of the phase - which led to comparatively great commercial success of this and the following parallel . With Parallels and Inside Out , two more melodic and less complex albums were released, some of which received good reviews, but some were criticized as too commercial.

The third phase of the band begins with A Pleasant Shade of Gray (1997), or at the latest with Disconnected (2000), in which electronic elements are increasingly finding their way. In Jim Matheos ' side project OSI , these even dominate in places.

Illustration based on examples

Text example from the first phase from the song Exodus from the album Awaken the Guardian :

Oh guardian predestination calls
Silent wind I felt what you said
Soon I'm exhumed for consumation
He charmed my soul with his book of the Dead
He read it said beat no children
He will inhere the malignant fear in man
Sovreign the force more than emotion
It controls your destiny at hand.

Text example from the second phase from the song Nothing Left to Say from the album Perfect Symmetry :

Behind the ambitions
of a child who found his way
there's a cold realization
that our deeds die with the day
And behind the disguise
of a man with a cause
there's a child screaming
with nothing left to say.
