A Change of Seasons (English: " A change of seasons ") is an EP by the US progressive metal band Dream Theater , which was released in 1995 .
background
The title track "A Change of Seasons" is a 23-minute song divided into seven chapters. The text of the piece was written by Mike Portnoy , the music was composed by the entire band. The beginnings of the song date back to 1989, the time the album Images and Words was created, and was originally intended as the final track for the album (which the record company had rejected at the time). After the live performance of an early version of the work in 1993 and a further revision, the song was recorded. The remainder of the CD is filled with recordings of the live performance under the motto "Uncovered" that took place on January 31, 1995 at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London . The four tracks are completely cover versions of tracks by Elton John , Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin as well as a medley of tracks by Pink Floyd , Kansas , Queen , Journey , the Dixie Dregs and Genesis .
A full live version was performed when the band performed on August 30, 2000 at the Roseland Ballroom in New York , and a recording of this concert was released on the live album Live Scenes from New York . The piece was also featured in the encore every evening on the Images, Words And Beyond Tour in 2017.
As is typical for progressive metal pieces, the work is of considerable length. Dream Theater released four more pieces, the length of which is above the 20-minute limit: " Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ", the 42-minute longest piece by the band, " Octavarium ", which lasts 24 minutes, the 25-minute " In the Presence of Enemies ”from the album Systematic Chaos and the 22-minute piece“ Illumination Theory ”from the self-titled album Dream Theater .
