Dream Theater is the self-titled, twelfth studio album by the American progressive metal / progressive rock band Dream Theater . It was released on September 23, 2013 in Europe by Roadrunner Records and a day later in the United States.
background
During the A Dramatic Turn of Events tour in April 2012, the writing process for Dream Theater's self-titled album began. During rehearsals, the band improvised and picked up their ideas. Guitarist John Petrucci tried out composed material independently. In January 2013, the band re-entered Cove City Sound Studios in Glen Cove, New York, where they had recorded their previous album, A Dramatic Turn of Events . The recordings were completed in May. Richard Chycki, guitarist of the glam metal band Winter Rose , of which singer James LaBrie was a member before joining Dream Theater, was the sound engineer on the album .
composition
Dream Theater is the first Dream Theater album in which drummer Mike Mangini was fully involved in the creative process from the start. The drum parts on the previous album A Dramatic Turn of Events were programmed by John Petrucci using a drum computer and recorded by Mangini afterwards. Commenting on Mangini's work, Petrucci said, "When people hear the drumming on this album, they're going to go nuts. He did a good job on the last album, but he wasn't involved in the writing process and had re-recorded programmed drum parts. Also of course when he used his creativity to change everything and do his own thing, I could now feel that it is now Mike Mangini with the chains broken. He is responsible for everything. All the creativity, all the decisions and ideas - and man, this guy's an animal. "
The album contains two instrumentals for the first time since Train of Thought in 2003. A string ensemble also plays the pieces "False Awakening Suite" and "Illumination Theory", conducted and arranged by Eren Başbuğ.
publication
The album was released on September 24, 2013. The album's first single, The Enemy Inside , was made available via stream on USA Today on August 5th. The second single, "Along for the Ride", was made available for streaming a month later. On September 16, Rolling Stone magazine made the entire album available as a free stream on its website a week before it was released. The album was released in a CD edition, a combined CD + DVD edition, a double vinyl LP edition, a limited box set and digitally (both in regular and high resolution, again in the latter case with significantly less compression).
reception
Dream Theater was positively received. Allmusic called it "one of the more dynamic, far-reaching albums from DT's catalog" and gave special praise to Mike Manginis' full integration into the band. Loudwire gave the album a rating of 4.5 / 5 and said: "Powerful and atmospheric, 'Dream Theater' pushes the boundaries of new musical dimensions, a cosmic realm reserved for the best."
It also received praise from Metalholic.com : " Get ready not only to be touched by this album ... 'Dream Theater' is an emotional leviathan". UltimateGuitar.com gave the album positive feedback saying, "The musical skill is flawless (as always), the compositions are awesome, the mix is great".
After its release on September 24, 2013, the album had sold 34,000 copies in the first week, which put it at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart, which Dream Theater marks the second-highest chart position of its career, behind Black Clouds & Silver Linings , which place 6 reached. It is also, for the third year in a row, a Top 10 album for the band. The album also made it to the top of Billboard's "Hard Rock Albums" list. It reached the top 5 in fifteen countries including Germany, Japan, Argentina, Holland, Finland, Italy, Switzerland and Canada; and Top 10 in nine countries including Denmark, Norway, Austria, Australia and the United Kingdom.
On December 6th, 2013 it was announced that The Enemy Inside was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Metal Performance".
