John Ro Myung (born January 24, 1967 in Chicago , USA ) is an American musician and bassist in the progressive metal band Dream Theater .

The son of Korean parents, he grew up on Long Island , New York , NY . Because he always listened to classical music at home, he started playing the violin at the age of five. When he discovered the bass, however, he decided to give up playing the violin and devote himself entirely to the bass. He studied with his friend John Petrucci at the Berklee College of Music in Boston , where they also met Mike Portnoy . With him they formed the band Majesty , which later became Dream Theater . In addition to his work at Dream Theater, he also plays bass in the project The Jelly Jam .

Myung is still considered a very dedicated musician to this day. During his studies at Berklee he practiced up to six hours a day and to this day, whether in the studio, on tour or privately, he is rarely found without a bass.

He is known for his fast, accomplished bass lines , especially his tapping technique. Since he is considered a role model for many young musicians, he has already published an instructional video. Personally, however, Myung always appears reserved and cautious in public, which has already earned him a certain cult status among the fans of Dream Theater.

In addition to his mainly six-string bass, John Myung also plays the Chapman Stick , a rare instrument that is only played by tapping and hammering and is only mastered by a few musicians, for example Tony Levin .
