Systematic Chaos (English for: " Systematic Chaos ") is the ninth studio album by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater . It was released on June 1, 2007 in Europe and on June 5, 2007 in America. Systematic Chaos is the group's first album to be released on Roadrunner Records .

background

Systematic Chaos was written and recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City from September 2006 to January 2007 . It was produced by guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy , among others , and mixed by Paul Northfield. The album was completed on February 14, 2007. In the same month the list of titles was made public. The album was released in two versions, a normal version with a CD and a special edition, with a CD on which the album can be heard and a DVD on which a 90-minute making-of with interviews can be seen, as well the complete album in 5.1 surround sound. The Special Edition has a different CD cover than the normal version.

Music genre

Along with Awake , Train of Thought and Distance over Time, the album is one of the band's heaviest albums. However, this time Dream Theater is not oriented towards the heavy metal direction , as with Train of Thought , but more towards the melodic direction, with many progressive elements. Mike Portnoy himself described Systematic Chaos as a tough and technical album. He also called it "dramatic and aggressive".

Songs

The official Dream Theater website announced in early 2007 that the band was looking for 50 fans from the New York City area . You should be on the album in the songs "Prophets of War" and "In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 2 “can be heard. In January 2007 a lot of fans came and sang some shouts so that they could be used in the background of these two songs. Among others, also Mikael Åkerfeldt , Steve Vai , Joe Satriani , Steven Wilson , Chris Jericho , Daniel Gildenlöw and Neal Morse heard on the song "Repentance" as speaker.

The fifth song on the album, "Repentance," is the fourth song in Mike Portnoy's "Alcoholics Anonymous" cycle , in which Portnoy describes his experiences with alcohol addiction and Alcoholics Anonymous . The three songs "The Glass Prison" by Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence , "This Dying Soul" by Train of Thought and "The Root of All Evil" by Octavarium deal with the subject. The song represents steps eight and nine of the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The AA cycle was completed with "The Shattered Fortress" from the follow-up album Black Clouds & Silver Linings .

"Constant Motion" is the first single from the album. It was released on April 27, 2007. In addition, a music video was shot for “Constant Motion”, the band's first video since 1997. The first single, “Constant Motion”, was on the official website long before the album and single were released Roadrunner Records website and Dream Theater's MySpace page.

At the request of Mike Portnoy, who is also one of the producers of the album, the song "In the Presence of Enemies" was split into two parts. Part 1 is the first song on the album and lasts exactly 9 minutes, Part 2 is the last song on the album and lasts over 16 minutes. The British rock band Pink Floyd (considered one of the band's greatest influences) used a similar concept with the song "Shine on You Crazy Diamond", which appeared on their 1975 album Wish You Were Here . Despite the division, "In the Presence of Enemies" is a composition and was played live in one piece on the tour at that time. This makes "In the Presence of Enemies" the band's second longest song at 25 minutes and 38 seconds, after "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" which is 42 minutes long. However, sometimes only part of it is played live.
