John Peter Petrucci (born July 12, 1967 in Long Island , New York ) is the guitarist of the American progressive metal band Dream Theater .

Life

John Petrucci began playing the guitar at the age of eight in an attempt to emulate his sister, who was also learning to play an instrument at the time. However, it stopped after a short time. When he was twelve years old, his friend formed a school band. This moved him to start playing the guitar again. During this time he met John Myung , who is still the bass player for Dream Theater.

Petrucci's main musical influences include bands like Yes , Pink Floyd , Rush , Metallica , Iron Maiden and guitarists Steve Howe , Steve Vai , Alex Lifeson , Al Di Meola , Allan Holdsworth and especially Steve Morse . In interviews he sometimes jokingly refers to his role models as the "Als and the Steves". Petrucci was a student with Myung at the Berklee College of Music in Boston , but only for one year. It was there that they met Mike Portnoy , with whom they founded the band Majesty , which later became Dream Theater.
