Steve J. Morse (born July 28, 1954 in Hamilton , Ohio ) is an American musician and co-founder of the American fusion band Dixie Dregs . The guitarist studied jazz and classical guitar at the University of Miami 's School of Music in Florida and was voted "Guitar Player of the Year" five times in a row by Guitar Player Magazine . He has also been nominated for a Grammy six times .

In addition to the Dixie Dregs and Steve Morse Band projects (with Dave LaRue on bass, among others ), which focus on purely instrumental music, he has been a permanent member of Deep Purple since 1994 . There he is the successor to Joe Satriani , who in turn had temporarily replaced Ritchie Blackmore . In the 1980s he was also instrumental in the American progressive rock group Kansas . In 1983 he also replaced Al Di Meola in the guitar trio with John Mclaughlin and Paco de Lucia .

In 2003 he founded the hard rock supergroup Living Loud with bassist Bob Daisley , Uriah Heep drummer Lee Kerslake , keyboardist Don Airey and singer Jimmy Barnes . The band's first album was the band's name. The band's only single was released with a 2005 concert album (Live In Sydney 2004).

In 2010 he teamed up with the American singer and pianist Sarah Spencer under the band name Angelfire and released a CD of the same name.

In 2011 Morse became part of a supergroup with drummer Mike Portnoy , singer Casey McPherson , Neal Morse and, Dave LaRue. The band is known as Flying Colors and released an album with their band name in 2012. In 2014 they released their second studio album, Second Nature.

In his private life, Morse is aviation and also worked professionally as an airline pilot from 1987 to 1988. [1]

Musically he combines rock , country , funk , jazz and classical music .

Style of play

The accurate alternate picking technique is characteristic of Morse’s game . Basically he strikes every note very hard and with fast runs he also mutes the strings with the ball of his hand. He uses alternate picking so consistently that he strikes continuously even with classical arpeggios , which are ideally suited for sweep picking (for example “Tumeni Notes” by Steve Morse / “Cascades, I'm Not Your Lover Now” by Deep Purple).

He rarely uses tapping or legato techniques, which he then plays out very succinctly when used. His vibrato is very wide and quite fast. After fast runs, which Steve Morse often seem like approaches to a note, he often mutes this target tone slightly with the side of the thumb so that only an overtone can be heard. The sound material he uses during a guitar solo is based almost exclusively on the Mixolydian mode or the major pentatonic scale in conjunction with many chromatic tones.

Morse also uses unusual playing techniques such as " chicken picking " or harp harmonics to create a more varied spectrum of sounds. He also uses the volume pot of his guitar in solos to achieve a violin-like effect.
