Lee Kerslake (1973)

Lee Kerslake (born April 16, 1947 in Bournemouth , † September 19, 2020 ) was a British drummer . He played for the band Uriah Heep for many years .

Life

Kerslake joined Uriah Heep in late 1971, after an LP with the National Head Band, who had used four drummers in the first two years of their existence. Lee was the Heep musician's dream drummer. Ken Hensley had worked with him between 1968 and 1970 in the bands The Gods , Head Machine and Toe Fat . Together with bassist Gary Thain , Lee formed the musical backbone of the band during the years of their ascent, and he was the drummer on the most important Uriah Heep albums . The term “body drumming” was coined for him because he didn't just seem to play with arms and legs, but also used his entire body.

He left the band in October 1979, but returned in April 1982. During this time he played for Ozzy Osbourne , with whom he recorded the album Blizzard Of Ozz , among other things . Later there were legal disputes with Ozzy Osbourne because of the musical exploitation rights , which were decided in favor of Ozzy Osbourne.

2003 and 2004 was Kerslake drummer of the project Living Loud , which also include guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey (both from Deep Purple ), bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley (among other things also Uriah Heep and Ozzy Osbourne) and Cold Chisel - Singer Jimmy Barnes involved. This supergroup re- recorded some songs from the time of Kerslake and Daisley for Ozzy Osbourne on their only album, just as they both had imagined at the time but were unable to implement.

In the spring of 2007, Uriah Heep announced that Kerslake had withdrawn because of his ongoing health problems. Kerslake also played drums afterwards, now with the band Masters Project.

On October 15, 2015, Kerslake played together with Ken Hensley as a guest at a Uriah Heep concert in the Crocus City Hall in Moscow .

In 2015, Kerslake was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The disease became public at the end of 2018, as the doctors only gave Kerslake eight months to live and he also had to fight against bone cancer . On December 14th, 2018 he appeared for the last time as a guest of Uriah Heep at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London. In addition, despite years of differences, Ozzy Osbourne gave him two platinum records for participating in the albums Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman , as this was a wish of Kerslake.

He died on September 19, 2020 at the age of 73 from complications from his cancer .
