The Gods

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gods were an English rock band that existed from 1965 to 1969. Several musicians who became known later were at times members of the band.

history

The original band members were Mick Taylor (later with John Mayalls Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones ), Brian Glascock and his brother John (later with Jethro Tull ). The three were school friends and had played together as The Juniors (or The Strangers) since 1962. The Juniors, which included Malcolm Collins and Alan Shacklock, got a recording deal, and in 1964 their single There's a Pretty Girl / Pocket Size came out . In 1965 Ken Hensley (guitar, keyboards, vocals, later with Uriah Heep ) and Joe Konas (guitar, vocals) came as new band members, and from then on they called themselves "The Gods".

In 1966 the Gods were the opening act for Cream at the Starlite Ballroom in Wembley , London . In 1967 they recorded the single Come On Down To My Boat Baby / Garage Man in the cast Mick Taylor , Ken Hensley , John Glascock , Brian Glascock and Lee Kerslake (later also with Uriah Heep ) .

In May 1967, Mick Taylor joined the Bluesbreakers to replace Peter Green . The Gods moved to London, where they performed at the Marquee Club . In June 1967 John Glascock left, replacing Paul Newton first, then Greg Lake (later Emerson, Lake and Palmer ). Lake left the Gods in the summer of 1968 to form King Crimson with Robert Fripp , and John Glascock came back to the Gods.

In this line-up they recorded two albums, Genesis (1968) and To Samuel a Son (1969). Her best-known single was Hey Bulldog (1969), originally by the Beatles .

Before the second album was released, the Gods had broken up. Most of the band members joined Cliff Bennett , with whom they performed under the name Toe Fat .
