John Glascock (born May 2, 1951 in Islington , United Kingdom ; † November 17, 1979 in London ) was the bassist for the British rock group Jethro Tull from 1975 to 1979 .

Life

Before John Glascock started playing bass with the British rock group Jethro Tull in 1975, he had already played on eight albums with various other music groups. His musical career began in 1962 with The Juniors (until 1964), together with his brother Brian and the later Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor .

Other stations in his career before Jethro Tull were The Gods (1965 to 1969 with Ken Hensley and Lee Kerslake ), Head Machine (1970), Toe Fat (1969-1970 with Cliff Bennett ) and Chicken Shack (1970 to 1972).

From 1973 to 1975 he played, again with his brother, in Carmen , an innovative flamenco rock band from Los Angeles . When Carmen was engaged as the opening act for Jethro Tull's War Child tour, John Glascock and Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson met. Carmen disbanded in 1975 after the band had financial problems and no longer a record deal and an engagement as the opening act for the Rolling Stones had been canceled at short notice. In addition, the group's drummer was seriously injured when he fell from a horse.

After Glascock had been unemployed for several months, he received an invitation from Ian Anderson to replace the previous Jethro Tull bassist Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond , who was turning to other projects .

During the group's Heavy Horses tour, he became seriously ill when a dental disease damaged his heart, which was already burdened by a heart valve defect inherited from his father . An operation in which the defective heart valve was replaced did not bring the hoped-for improvement, and after he could no longer do all the appearances on the current tour in 1978, he was on stage for Jethro Tull for the last time on May 1, 1979 .

During the recording of the album Stormwatch , his condition deteriorated and John was forced to leave the group. He was succeeded by Dave Pegg .

After his body finally rejected the new heart valve, John Glascock died on November 17, 1979 in London.
