Bursting Out (long form Jethro Tull Live - Bursting Out ) is the first live album by the progressive rock band Jethro Tull .
occupation
Jethro Tull recorded the album with Ian Anderson , Martin Barre , John Evan , Barriemore Barlow , David Palmer and John Glascock . Most of the lyrics and compositions are, as is usual with Jethro Tull, by Ian Anderson, who also produced the album . Martin Barre composed Conundrum and Barriemore Barlow together Quatrain . Jennie Anderson is listed as the copywriter for Aqualung . Bourée is originally from Johann Sebastian Bach , while God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is a traditional adapted from Jethro Tull . The Dambusters March was composed by Eric Coates .
history
In 1978 Jethro Tull released the album Heavy Horses , which is considered the middle album of the folk-rock phase. The band then went on the Heavy Horses tour in Europe . Bursting Out was created in May and June 1978 during this tour. The festival hall in Bern was one of the recording locations . The album was released on September 22, 1978. In 1990 a shortened version was released on CD in the USA. In 2004 a remastered double CD was released with the songs from the original edition.
After the appearance of Bursting Out , Jethro Tull released other live albums, some of which were recorded before 1978.
album
The band plays “loud and hard”. According to the announcement, the piece Jack in the Green is played with instruments that are atypical for the respective musicians. Bassist John Glascock plays the lead guitar, guitarist Martin Barre can be heard on the marimba and drummer Barriemore Barlow plays the glockenspiel.
The album contains several pieces from the album Heavy Horses, but not the title track. The oldest track is A New Day Yesterday from Jethro Tull's second album Stand Up . The longest piece is a shortened version of the piece Thick as a Brick , which is over 40 minutes long in the original.
Cover
The cover shows Ian Anderson singing and sitting on a stage floor with his legs apart. A large, brown-orange balloon hovers above him, on which the album title is written in capital letters. The rest of the photo is black with individual light effects, some of the band members can be made out vaguely. There is a black frame around the photo on which the band name and "Live" are written in small capital letters.
The backs of the album differ significantly depending on the release date. When the LP version was first pressed in Germany in 1978, there is a photo of the band thanking the audience from the stage, obviously after the concert. All the members look happy and some of them wave from the stage. In addition, the title list with top notes is shown above the photo, the top notes are explained below the photo; these are the recording locations. On the CD version from 2004 you can see Anderson at an angle from behind holding the illuminated balloon on which the song titles are printed, in the background on the left John Evan is sitting at the keyboard.
effect
The album peaked at number 17 in the UK. At Allmusic, the album received three out of five possible points. The main criticism was that the suspected loud atmosphere of some of the tracks did not really come into their own in the recording.
