In August 2011 it was announced that Carey would work on a new album again after the birth of her twins. Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse , the first real album since 2009, wasn't released until two and a half years later.

The album was partly positively received by critics. Kenneth Partridge from Billboard magazine gave 77 out of 100 possible points in his review. Jim Farber of the New York Daily News gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Caroline Sullivan described the album with its mixture of different styles as a success. For laut.de , on the other hand , Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse is “a huge pile of rubbish rubbish from Klingklang”. The album shows that Carey has lost "the connection to the essence of her early days".

Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse debuted at number 3 on the US Billboard 200 with 58,000 units sold . In Germany the album came in at number 27, in Austria at number 38 and in Switzerland at number 16. In the United Kingdom it was at number 14.

In the months after the release, sales remained well below expectations, whereupon Mariah Carey split from longtime producer Jermaine Dupri .
