Vision of Love is a pop / R & B - Ballad of the American singer Mariah Carey , it was written by her and produced. Vision of Love is Carey's debut single and was released on May 15, 1990 in the USA as the first single from her debut album Mariah Carey (1990). The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks in the summer of 1990 , making it their first number one hit in the US.

Background, composition and content

Vision of Love was the first song Carey wrote and produced after signing a recording deal with Columbia Records .

The protagonist of the song describes having a “vision of love”, which then did not come true. The song is about Carey's dreams as a singer. Carey told Ebony magazine that the song "represents everything in [her] life" and was "a song from [her] heart". According to her own statements, the song is about her experiences and experiences when she was younger, as well as her relationships with her parents and friends in the neighborhood.

The song was nominated for three Grammys at the 1990 Grammy Awards : Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (Won), Record of the Year (Nominated), and Song of the Year (Nominated). In 2006, The New Yorker referred to the song as "the Magna Carta des Melismas" and as Carey's great influence on other R&B artists, as well as American Idol candidates. A Slant magazine reviewer said, "I think [ Vision of Love ] was a vision for the future world of American Idol ." About.com said that " Vision of Love is one of her best songs of her musical career [... ] It's quite simply the most successful debut single ever released. "

Singer Beyoncé Knowles said she started singing after hearing Vision of Love for the first time . Singer Mikaila said that Vision of Love inspired her to sing. Vision of Love is also Rihanna's favorite song .

Commercial win

In the United States, Vision of Love debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 73. Nine weeks later, in the week ending June 2, 1990, the song peaked at number 1 . It stayed at the top of the Hot 100 for 4 weeks and reached number 6 on the US annual charts in 1990. The single also reached number 1 on Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks . The RIAA awarded Vision of Love in August 1990 with gold from.

Vision of Love reached the top ten in Australia , the United Kingdom (over 170,000 units sold in total), Ireland and the Netherlands . It reached # 1 in Canada and New Zealand .

Music video

The music video was directed by Bojan Bazelli. Carey sings the song on a dark stage, in the background you can see the sky on a canvas with moving clouds. This is the second music video made for this song, the previous one was not released. Rolling Stone claimed the combined cost of the two music videos cost $ 450,000.
