Joy to the World
Joy to the World ("Rejoice, World") is one of the most popular and well-known Christmas carols from the Anglo-Saxon language area.
Isaac Watts (1674–1748) wrote the text in 1719 ( The Psalms of David in the New Testament language for the Christian class and worship ) based on the second part of Psalm 98 . In 1836 Lowell Mason adapted the music from an older melody and arranged the choral setting. Since the first four notes of the piece resemble the choir Lift up your heads (“Hoch tut dich auf”) from the oratorio Messiah by Georg Friedrich Handel and Glory to God (“Ehre sei Gott”) and also a theme from the tenor recitative Comfort ye my people ("Consoling my people") can be heard in the middle part, this is initially treated as the original composer. However, he is not the sole author.

text
- Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
- Let earth receive her King;
- Let every heart prepare Him room,
- And heaven and nature sing,
- And heaven and nature sing,
- And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.
- Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
- Let men their songs employ;
- While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
- Repeat the sounding joy,
- Repeat the sounding joy,
- Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.
- No more let sins and sorrows grow,
- Nor thorns infest the ground;
- He comes to make His blessings flow
- Far as the curse is found,
- Far as the curse is found,
- Far as, far as, the curse is found.
- He rules the world with truth and grace,
- And makes the nations prove
- The glories of His righteousness,
- And wonders of His love,
- And wonders of His love,
- And wonders, wonders, of His love.
Translations into German
Version by Walter Rauschenbusch (1897)
- Rejoice, world, your king is approaching.
- Open your gates.
- Rich in grace and noble in deed,
- the lord of glory,
- the lord of glory,
- the Lord, the Lord, of glory.
- Rejoice, world, your king is approaching.
- Now happily rustle your singing!
- Of fields and meadows, of mountains and sea
- resound the jubilation!
- Resound the jubilation,
- resound, resound the sound of jubilation!
- Day is breaking! The Lord commanded!
- Gone mankind night:
- His scepter is justice
- and love is his power!
- And love is his power!
- And love, and love, is his power!

- the lord of glory,
- the lord of glory,
- the Lord, the Lord, of glory.
- Jesus is coming soon, get ready.
- He helps out of the night of sin.
- His scepter is called mercy
- and love is his power
- and love is his power
- and love and love is his power.
- Rejoice because Jesus wins,
- will be the whole world.
- Satan's kingdom is down,
- because Christ liked him,
- because Christ liked him,
- because Christ, because Christ pleased him.
Version by Annette Sommer (1985)
- Rejoice, world, the Lord is here! Accept your king!
- And every heart receive him, make room for him and sing to him!
- Yes, earth and sky sing, yes, earth and sky sing,
- yes, earth, yes, earth and sky sing!
- Rejoice, world, your Savior is coming. Agree, folks, agree!
- And field and forest and stream and beach and rocks, hills, flat land,
- take on the praise, take on the praise,
- take up, take up the hymn of praise.
- Sin and guilt are averted, the land is at peace.
- For God's salvation illuminates the world, His rich blessing fills it,
- freed from all curse, freed from all curse,
- freed from everything, every curse.
- He rules with truth, justice and grace, and all nations see
- the glory of his righteousness and his love mightiness,
- all the world again, all the world again
- the all, all the world again.
Parodies
Like many popular songs and poems, Joy to the World has seen numerous reinterpretations.
"Death to the World"
The variant of the HP Lovecraft Historical Society .
- Death to the world! Cthulhu ’s come
- Let Earth abhor this thing
- Let every mind prepare for doom
- As anguish and woe he'll bring
- Up from the sea, R'lyeh did rise
- The cultists awestruck dumb
- With ancient rites so wretched and perverse
- Cthulhu's time has come
- Death to the world! Cthulhu reigns
- The Great Old Ones Destroy
- With wrath and doom, so cruel and foul
- Replete with obscene joy
- He rules the Earth with dreadful might
- And through our ghastly dreams
- His twisting turning tentacles
- Elicit from us maddened screams
- Cthulhu's time has come
"Joy to the World, our teacher's dead"
The following variant of the Christmas carol is particularly popular with school children in the United States.
- Joy to the world, the teacher's dead
- We barbecued the head
- Don't worry about the body
- We flushed it down the potty
- And round and round it goes
- And round and round it goes
- And rou-ound and rou-ou-ound and round it goes
We also like to replace barbecued with amputated and teacher with principal (“director”). We flushed it down the potty can be translated as “ We flushed it down the toilet”.
