overview

The song was produced by her, Jermaine Dupri , Manuel Seal and Johntá Austin and by Carey, Dupri and Seal for Carey's tenth music album The Emancipation of Mimi (2005). It gets its hook "it's like that y'all" from the Run-DMC songs Hollis Crew (1984), Here We Go (Live) (1983) and It's Like That . The song was released on January 7, 2005 as the first single on the album. It became a success and a top 20 hit in many countries around the world, including number 16 in the United States and number 4 in the United Kingdom. At the 2006 Grammy Awards , the song was nominated in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category.

background

Originally, Stay the Night feat. Kanye West to be released as the first single on the album. However, rumors later emerged that Say Somethin ' feat. Snoop Dogg would be the first single to be released. But plans were changed again after LA Reid, president of Island Records , recommended Carey to add more strong and commercial songs to the album to ensure the songs and album would be successful. After a few more conversations with Dupri, Carey finally released the pop-commercial It's Like That as the album's first single. In the song, Dupri and Fatman Scoop can be heard as rappers and background, and Mariah Carey raps some passages herself.

Music video

The music video was directed by Brett Ratner , who previously shot many music videos for Mariah Carey. The video was recorded at a location near the Greystone Park Mansion in Beverly Hills , California . At the beginning of the music video there is a party in a villa, it is the night before the protagonist Eric Roberts gets married. Some guests wear masks. In the music video, celebrities Brian McKnight, Randy Jackson and the two rappers in the song, Dupri and Fatman Scoop, have cameo appearances. Carey sings at the end of the music video, based on the rap by Fatman Scoop, that she will not marry her boyfriend and that he will be her ex-boyfriend. The ending of the It's Like That video continues in the music video for the next single We Belong Together (both music videos were shot at the same time).

success

After a few years of hiatus, It's Like That became a commercial hit and a successful comeback single for Carey. In the United States, the song reached number 16 on the American Billboard Hot 100 , before most of the songs that Carey released between 2001 and 2004 did not make it into the US charts. In the 2005 annual charts, the song reached number 69 in the USA. For over 500,000 units sold, the song was also honored with a gold record in the United States. It was Carey's first download single, which also went gold through download sales. Outside the United States, the song was even more successful. It reached the top 20 in Germany, France and Norway, the top ten in Australia, Switzerland and Italy, and 4th place in the UK.
