Someday is a song by the American singer Mariah Carey . It was written by Carey and Ben Margulies and produced by Ric Wake. It was released on December 13, 1990 as the third single from her debut album Mariah Carey . The single reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 .

Someday was one of five songs on the demo recording that Brenda K. Starr gave to Sony boss Tommy Mottola, which ultimately led to Mariah Carey getting a recording deal . Sony made some changes to the demo recordings; the horn melodies were replaced by electric guitars and the end of the song was shortened by 8 seconds. Carey and Margulies had to accept the changes to the recording and Carey sang the song after some concerns. Nevertheless, Carey was unhappy after singing the new recording, because, according to her, the recording had been changed too much and lost its quality.
Music video
The music video was directed by Larry Jordan, it was shot in Bayonne High School in Bayonne, New Jersey and shows a boy who mistreats and abuses a girl and now wants her back in his life. In one scene, hip-hop break dancers appear in the video, dancing with Mariah Carey. There you can also see the drummer Larry Wright, who uses various objects as drums in the video. A second, longer music video was recorded, but this was never released.
Charts and chart placements
Someday reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in eight weeks and became Carey's third number one hit in the United States. From March 3 to March 16, 1991, it was number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. It replaced Whitney Houston's All the Man That I Need from the top and was himself replaced by Timmy T's One More Try . Someday reached number 13 in the 1991 annual charts in the United States. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded the song gold .
