Never Too Far / Hero Medley is a medley recording by the American singer Mariah Carey from her greatest hits album. The song was written and produced by Mariah Carey and Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis. In 2001, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the medley was released as a benefit single. The medley combines the first verse from her song Never Too Far , with the verse and bridge from Hero (1993). The medley is intended to represent a message of eternal love after the terrorist attacks.

background

The medley was only released in the United States . Originally, Hero (a single from Carey's album Music Box ) was a number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 , while Never Too Far (a single from the soundtrack album Glitter ) missed the US charts. The Medley Never Too Far / Hero Medley only reached number 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. It only stayed in the American charts for three weeks and was commercially unsuccessful. The proceeds from the charity single were supposed to help the victims of the terrorist attacks. All proceeds went to Heroes Fund, a charity for the victims of the attacks and their families.

VH1 and MTV broadcast live performances of the song, which also served as music videos , where Carey sings the medley at the United We Stand: What More Can I Give concert. Carey also sang the song with Irish boy band Westlife at the Top of the Pops Awards 2001 , which Carey previously worked with on their single Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) (2000). Al B. Rich and Mike Rizzo recorded remixed versions of the medley.

In Japan , Never Too Far / Hero Medley was more popular and successful, so the medley later appeared as a bonus track in the Japanese version of Carey's Greatest Hits Album.

The B-side of the There for Me medley was played more often than the medley by American radio stations. There for Me was produced and written by Carey with Diane Warren . There for Me was originally written for Carey's album Rainbow (1999). The song later appeared on the B-side of Never Too Far / Hero Medley as a "gift" for Carey's fans and to help boost sales for the charity single.
