One Sweet Day is a song by the American singer Mariah Carey and the R&B group Boyz II Men . It was written jointly by Carey, Walter Afanasieff and members of Boyz II Men, Wanyá Morris , Shawn Stockman , Nathan Morris, and Michael McCary . One Sweet Day was produced by Carey and Afanasieff for their fifth studio album Daydream . It was released as the second single on November 15, 1995. By August 2019, the single at 16 weeks was the one, along with Despacito , that was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the longest time. The record was set by Old Town Road almost 24 years later .
background
The song is about how the lyric self loses a loved one and misses them every day. The possibility of seeing them again one day in heaven is addressed. Both Carey and Boyz II Men wrote the song for people in their lives. It was dedicated to the victims of the disease AIDS , which in 1995 was increasingly in the public eye. The death of producer David Cole and Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark were the inspiration for the song.
Criticism and success
One Sweet Day received essentially positive reviews. In addition to the chart success in the USA, it was also successful worldwide and a number one hit in Canada and New Zealand . In Australia , Belgium , France , Ireland , the Netherlands , Norway , Sweden and the United Kingdom , it reached the top ten of the respective charts.
performance

The song was performed live in several television programs around the world, for example at the 1996 Grammy Awards on February 26, 1996. The piece has also been played live again and again on Carey tours.
Music video
The music video was played in early 1996, showing clips of Carey and Boyz II Men recording in the studio. Due to the artist's lack of time, the concept was chosen to be filmed in the studio. Carey later welcomed this, believing that no video would adequately reproduce the content of the song.
