background

Luis Fonsi
Daddy Yankee

Before working at Despacito , Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee worked together on the song Una Oportunidad in 2010, which was released digitally in 2010. This was originally supposed to be part of the Mundial album , but has been canceled. They completed a joint studio session at the end of 2016 after Fonsi invited Daddy Yankee to perform as a guest musician on the song Despacito . He had already written this together with Erika Ender.

Despacito was digitally released via Universal Music Latin on January 13, 2017 after being announced two weeks in advance. The idea of the song was based on the fusion of Latin pop and American urban music, which developed into a trend wave through Nicky Jam , Thalía , Enrique Iglesias , Carlos Vives , Ricky Martin and Shakira . Fonsi called this “the new pop”. Several remix and cover versions appeared during the spring. At the same time, the track developed into a global success that broke a number of records.

During the Billboard Latin Music Conference, Puerto Rican singer Nicky Jam announced that the song was originally to be recorded with him in place of Daddy Yankee.

Musical and creation

Songwriter Erika Ender

Despacito is primarily a fusion of Latin Pop and Reggaeton, which was composed in 4/4 time in B minor and has a tempo of 89 bpm . Fonsi described Despacito as “a danceable song that can be adapted to many musical genres.” In this sense, he does not assign the song to direct reggaeton but rather calls it a “mixture of a pop melody and a subtle urban beat. "

The B minor chord is updated to G major ( subdominant of the major parallel ). This step is not unusual, but characteristic of the song and runs from start to finish.

After two years without new music, Fonsi wanted to create a "funny track with this song, whose Latin influences can be understood through a melody that makes you feel good and just makes people dance". He showed the chorus to his girlfriend Erika Ender, who only won a Latin Grammy Award as a songwriter in 2016 and then co-wrote the rest of the song. The result was the fusion of several genres, the text of which was written as a ballad . According to Ender, the lyrics were written in Fonsi's house at the end of 2015 after he had expressed the wish to record a danceable song for his new album. They set themselves the goal of making good lyrics and the idea came up to write a song in which they "take care to express things tastefully".

After deciding to add some urban influences, Fonsi contacted reggaeton rapper Daddy Yankee and introduced him to the demo. In an interview with “ Billboard ” Luis Fonsi told about working with Daddy Yankee:

“Working with Daddy Yankee was definitely a plus for the song because it needed that blast that only he could create. When we were in the studio, we immediately realized that we were working on a very special song. But we had no idea that we would break records with "Despacito". I still don't understand what's going on here. I'm overwhelmed, happy, honored and I'll take it up as slowly as I can. I am happy that people are taking this new musical style positively. "

- Luis Fonsi :

content

The text is about a harmonious, romantic sexual encounter. Fonsi expresses this in the text through allegories. In order to express the topic tastefully without falling back into poetic clichés, he kept the text simple and did not adorn it with many metaphors.

«Despacito
Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito
Deja que te diga cosas al oído
Para que te acuerdes si no estás conmigo
Despacito
Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito
Firmar las paredes de tu laberinto
Y hacer de tu cuerpo todo un manuscrito»

“Quite leisurely
I want to smell your throat slowly.
Let me whisper things in your ear
so you can remember when you're not with me.
Slowly
I want to undress you gradually while kissing.
I want to leave my handwriting on the walls of your labyrinth
And make a manuscript out of your body "

- refrain

reception

criticism

Despacito received mostly positive reviews. The fusion of Latin pop and reggaeton was very well received due to the positive atmosphere and the ability to dance. Diana Marti from “E! News ”stated that“ it was almost impossible not to dance [to the song] ”. Caroline Soriano from "Enstars" magazine described the beat of the song as "pretty sexy and catchy" and defined the lyrics as "captivating". Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing of the online magazine " Dance-Charts " praised the simple way with which the song was built, but with which it can convince with atmosphere and emotion:

“A simple 4/4 beat, Spanish guitar sounds, a crisp bass and excellent vocals by Luis Fonsi and Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez aka Daddy Yankee are enough to get a hit out there. It's not that simple after all. 'Despacito' has the magic it takes to arrive worldwide. It hits the nerve of the times and works both on the dance floors and on the radio. "

- Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing : Dance Charts

In feminist circles the text has been labeled as sexist . Among other things, there is talk of machismo and submissiveness of women.

Commercial win

In the United States , Despacito debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, making it his top-ranked single since June 2009, when Aquí Estoy Yo hit the top. The song could also become his first number one hit on the Billboard Latin Digital Song Sales. This was achieved through almost 11,000 downloads in the week ending January 19, 2017. For Daddy Yankee, the song was his number one debut on the Hot Latin Songs Chart, in which he was previously featured 47 times. After entering all the Latin charts, the song debuted at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Fonsi's third and Yankees fifth chart success in the United States.

Despacito was able to reach the top ten in over 30 countries, including 22 top places in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , France , Belgium , the Netherlands , Italy and Spain . It is striking that the top position was achieved in almost all of the Latin American countries determined by “Monitor Latino” (including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Mexico). Despacito set a record by reaching number one in 11 Latin American countries . In Spain the song rose to number one and reached gold status within a week . Between February 2017 and April 2017, the single continued to be certified in Belgium, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the United States, breaking the one million sales mark.

Despacito also climbed to number three on the Billboard Latin Streaming Charts with 2.7 million streams on Spotify and YouTube . As the first Spanish-language song and the first Latino song, it became number 1 on the Spotify Global Charts on April 27, 2017.

The song stayed at the top of the Spanish singles chart for 25 weeks, setting a record. In Italy, too, he stayed at the top of the charts for 14 weeks, something only a few artists had achieved before. In addition, the single was at number one in the German charts at 17 weeks, the most successful Spanish-language hit single in Germany and together with Boney Ms Rivers of Babylon it holds the record at number one for most weeks. In addition, the single was awarded nine gold medals for over 1.8 million units sold. This makes Despacito one of the best-selling singles in Germany .

On August 4, 2017, the official video for the song was voted the most watched YouTube video of all time to date. As the first video, it exceeded 3 billion views. Previously, the song - including the remix version with Justin Bieber - set a new record with streaming providers with 4.6 billion views.

According to the IFPI's annual report , the single sold over 24.3 million copies in 2017.

In July 2017, the Malaysian government reported that, following public complaints , Despacito would no longer be allowed to be played by state broadcasters. The song is seen as un-Islamic and its text is "not suitable for listening". In August 2017, Emakunde , the Basque Institute for Women, drew up a list of 200 songs that the radio wanted to reject because of misogynist issues and “advocating treating women as an object”. Despacito is part of that list.

Parodies

A number of parodies of Despacito appeared on the Internet. One of the most famous is one produced by the Italian comedian group The Jackal . Three friends are sitting in a car. Despacito can be heard on the car radio. The guys make sure each other how stupid they think the song is, but can't help but sing along loudly. After the video became an internet hit, the Italians made a sequel. Here you are suddenly at an intersection next to Luis Fonsi, whom you address as Enrique Iglesias . Later Fonsi sits in the car with the three of them and they sing karaoke to Despacito .

aftermath

Importance to the artist and the genre

The success of the song and its remix version made Daddy Yankee the first Latin American artist on July 9, 2017, to become the world's most listened to artist on the Spotify streaming platform . Commenting on the success, Daddy Yankee said it was not his number one, but that of the entire reggaeton genre, while Fonsi expressed his pride in him and "didn't call him the big boss for no reason." . In June 2017, Billboard's Leila Cobo named Despacito as the song that revolutionized the interests of U.S. record labels in the Latin American music market. Washington Post's Julyssa Lopez said the success of Despacito with J Balvin's Mi gente " marks the beginning of a new Latin crossover era." Stephanie Ho of Genius wrote that “the successes of“ Despacito ”and“ Mi gente ”may point to the start of a successful wave of Spanish-language music in the United States”. Ho also suggested that "as" Despacito "proves, fans don't have to understand the language to enjoy the music". She makes reference to the song's worldwide success, including various non-Spanish speaking countries.

Economic influence

The La Perla area in Old San Juan

In July 2017, it was reported that tourist interest in Puerto Rico has increased 45% since the song's global success. The tour operators cite the music video of the song as the reason why the locations shown in the music video, such as the La Factoría bar or the La Perla district of the Old San Juan settlement , are much more popular.

Remixes and cover versions

Justin Bieber's remix became a worldwide hit

The first two official remixes for Despacito were released on March 17, 2017: a Fonsi solo pop version and a salsa version with the Puerto Rican musician Victor Manuelle . On April 16, 2017, a remix version was released with Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber , who sang in Spanish for the first time in his career. The song retains the original rhythms, and Luis Fonsi translated the first verse into English, while Daddy Yankee's verses were carried over from the original version. The official audio of the remix reached 18.8 million views on YouTube in the first 24 hours, making it the best start of a music-related video of 2017.

The success of the single led to different cover versions representing different musical genres. In January 2017, the Mexican band Grupo Bomba and the Spanish band Grupo Arena collaborated on a cumbia version. The Spanish musician Unai Karam released an instrumental piano version. Peruvian singer Maricarmen and Spanish musician Germán Barrera recorded an acoustic version before singer Merymel released a pop cover version. In February 2017, the Argentinian duo Wopa! and later released another cumbia version by the Argentine singer Kenny Bell. The Mexican singer Kosmic La Ciencia and the American singer Montie recorded a salsa version. Mexican singers Winder and Valeria Garza were working on a pop cover version. In addition, the Argentine singer Nicolás Iaciancio released a pop cover version and the Argentine singer Lionel Ferro together with the Peruvian singer Johann Vera a reggaeton version. In March 2017, the Argentine band La Cachirla released another version of Cumbia.

On May 5, 2017, two official remix versions were released. In addition to a remix in the big room style by Major Lazer and MOSKA, an Urbana and Sky version was released.

Music video

Filming & content

The official music video was released in parallel with the single on January 12, 2017, and with 5.14 million views within the first 24 hours, it broke the record set by J Balvin and his song Bobo for the most viewed Spanish-language Vevo clip within 24 hours. It was recorded in December 2016 at Barrio La Perla and La Factoría bar in Old San Juan , Puerto Rico and was filmed by Carlos Perez. The director had previously worked with Luis Fonsi on Corazón En La Maleta in 2014 and also with Daddy Yankee on Gangsta Zone in 2006, among others .

The music video shows the two artists walking the streets of La Perla as they sing the song. They also stand in a series of scenes on the coast and look out to sea. Later they celebrate together in La Factoría. Dance battles and a band that plays live on percussion can also be seen there. At the end, the studio recording is faded out and all visitors to the bar sing the song live. Miss Universe 2006 model Zuleyka Rivera can also be seen in the video . According to Luis Fonsi, the music video embodies Latin American culture, in which movement, dance and rhythm are an integral part.

success

The music video received an honorable mention on WatchMojo's top ten best music videos from January 2017. On the video platform “ Vevo ”, the video became the most viewed Spanish-language video in the first 24 hours. It received 5.14 million views, ousting J Balvin's Bobo from the throne. This recorded 4.9 million views after 24 hours.

Records

In addition, the official music video cracked all the records that record a maximum view of a Spanish-language video, depending on the time. So it was the Spanish video, which reached 100 million, 200 million, 300 million up to one billion views the fastest. In addition to the records as a Spanish-language music video on YouTube, it was also able to develop into one of the most successful music videos ever. Its positions as a video, regardless of language, have been surpassed in several categories by Ed Sheeran's Shape of You . As of April 2017, it had more than 1.05 billion views. On March 18, 2017 exceeded Chantaje of Shakira and Maluma as the world's most watched music video on YouTube of the year 2017. In August, it was the first video that reached the mark of 3 billion calls.

Trivia

  • On April 10, 2018, the music video disappeared from the video platform YouTube after a hacker attack on all Vevo channels. Instead of the original thumbnail, a frame from the Spanish television series House of Money was shown. The description was also changed and thereupon referred to those responsible. Vevo and YouTube restored the original state on the same day.
