The 27th and last echo award of the German Phono Academy took place on April 12, 2018 in the Messe Berlin . The echo was awarded as the previous year in 22 categories, which live from the German private channel VOX has been transferred. Around 550 jury members decided on the winners. Most nominations were booked with four Bausa and Ed Sheeran each ; It was followed by Luis Fonsi with three nominations. Andreas Herbig (national producer), Patrick Salmy (national producer) and Ed Sheeran (hit of the year) have been nominated several times within one category; Sheeran was nominated four times, but could not win more than three prizes, which he succeeded. Fonsi received an award, making it the first Echo winner from Puerto Rico .

The nomination and award of the album Jung, brutal, gutaussehend 3 by Farid Bang and Kollegah met with broad criticism, as critics saw lyrics glorifying violence and in parts anti-Semitic lyrics in the songs it contained. Kollegah and Farid Bang won an echo in the Hip-Hop / Urban national category despite criticism. As a result, several award-winning artists returned their echoes in protest against this decision.

The awards ceremony did not have a permanent moderator. The VOX presenter Amiaz Habtu took on individual moderation tasks , but otherwise the motto of the evening was “by musicians for musicians”, which meant that the nominees themselves led through the evening. For the first time an "Echo Public Viewing Deluxe" took place, in which more than 1000 fans could take part.

Two weeks before the award ceremony, the German music broadcaster Deluxe Music started labeling all nominees. During the broadcast of the nominees' music videos, the message "Echo 2018 nominated" was always displayed in the upper left corner of the image. VOX itself created the hashtag “#IchguckECHO”, which was advertised in advance in all commercial breaks. These were short advertising clips in which current and former Echo nominees and well-known VOX faces staged the hashtag. In the week in which the Echo was awarded, the VOX docu-soap Shopping Queen was also in his sign. The five participants all wanted to attend the Echo Awards, including the after-show party , and the winner ultimately received two tickets. Before the broadcast, Nova Meierhenrich , Nina Bott and Amiaz Habtu reported live from the red carpet for the VOX tabloid magazine Prominent! . Kollegah and Farid Bang scandal

Before the Echo Pop 2018 was awarded to Kollegah and Farid Bang in the Hip-Hop / Urban National category , the International Auschwitz Committee condemned the rap duo's planned participation: It was “ a slap in the face for all Holocaust survivors and a slap for Germany shameful process "; especially because of the lines of text from the song 0815 "My body is more defined than by Auschwitz inmates" and "Do another Holocaust, come on with the Molotov". The Ethics Council had decided in advance against the exclusion of the singers with a view to freedom of expression; Provocations are a general stylistic device used by rappers. The result of their study, entitled Defamation, Humor and Constructions of Masculinity , was published in Sprachreport 4/2018. At the award ceremony on April 12, 2018, the singer Campino declared that provocation is an important stylistic device; but if this is misogynistic , homophobic , right-wing extremist or anti-Semitic , a limit has been exceeded.

As a result, the awarding of the prize to Kollegah and Farid Bang and their appearance at the award ceremony was sharply criticized by numerous media, artists and politicians. The Jewish author Oliver Polak wrote: “Rappers like Kollegah are to blame that Jewish youth in schoolyards are afraid. And someone like that gets a prize - on Holocaust Remembrance Day . Why I felt sick at the Echo Awards. ”The Federal Government's Anti-Semitism Commissioner, Felix Klein , said that such passages were unacceptable. They “not only hurt Holocaust survivors, but their families as well. That abuses artistic freedom. It is very problematic that hundreds of thousands of young people can be reached with it. ” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas gave a similar verdict .

Peter Maffay , who left the echo award prematurely in protest with some other people after the appearance of the two rappers, described the award as a "slap in the face for democratic understanding in our country"; it shows "the erosion in our society and in the music scene" and is an expression of a "mixture of stupidity, cowardice and technical incompetence".

Wolfgang Börnsen , on the other hand, as a member of the Echo Ethics Advisory Board, defended the award. It is "about the limits of freedom of expression and artistic freedom in our country". If the advisory board had "not approved the album for the award ceremony, that would be censorship". However, he admitted that “the basis of all art must always be human dignity”, and he considered it appropriate “if the two controversial musicians would return their Echo Prize”. This view was contradicted by Igor Levit , who pointed out that it was not about censorship, but about whether this music should also be recognized. He pointed out that the freedom of art also means that one can also reject and fight against the corresponding content.

As a result, the musician Klaus Voormann , the pianist Igor Levit , the conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg , the rock musician Marius Müller-Westernhagen , the conductor Christian Thielemann , the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , three former singers of the Wise Guys , the conductor Daniel Barenboim , the Staatskapelle Berlin and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra returned their echo awards. The conductor Mariss Jansons and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks distanced themselves from their awards, but did not give them back.

The President of the German Cultural Council , Christian Höppner , left the Advisory Board of the Echo Music Prize in protest, as did the President of the German Music Council , Martin Maria Krüger .

As a consequence, the juice manufacturer Voelkel and the car manufacturer Škoda announced their withdrawal as sponsors of the music award.

Days before the award ceremony, the record company Bertelsmann Music Group Entertainment (BMG) took Kollegah and Farid Bang under protection and announced: “We take artists and artistic freedom seriously, and we don't tell our artists what their lyrics should and shouldn't contain”. After days of negative reporting, BMG announced that it was "resting" on the cooperation with the two rappers for the time being.

As a result of the criticism, the award of the echo was discontinued. In addition, the public prosecutor's office in Düsseldorf initiated an investigation against the rap duo for sedition. The authority had previously received two criminal charges. In June 2018, the public prosecutor closed the investigation against Kollegah and Farid Bang.

  • Shortly after the nominees were announced, the German online magazine for German-language music, smago! as in previous years, that the nominations were not made transparent enough. It is not understandable why in the category “Schlager” the duo Fantasy for their work Bonnie & Clyde - which only placed third in the German album charts - and not the number one albums now it's really going on from Klubbb3 or Regenbogen von Vanessa Mai are nominated. It is downright joke that, for example, Helene Fischer was not considered for the "Schlager" category two years ago and Vanessa Mai received the award for her album Für Dich , but not even for her number one album this year the nomination has been considered. The online magazine also criticizes the fact that only one hit echo and not several, as it was before, is awarded.
  • Dominik Sliskovic from Musikexpress described the nomination with musicians like the Kelly Family , Die Toten Hosen , Depeche Mode and Ed Sheeran as “a village DJ's playlist”. With Perfect and Shape of You, Sheeran made it into the list of nominees for “Hit of the Year” with two songs, which not only proves how limited Germany’s “mainstream radio taste” is, but also that the echo “Apparently” is still just an event “dictated” by sales figures and airplays . There is no other way of explaining the fact that a single artist recorded two “bloodcurdling good hits” that absolutely have to be nominated for the Echo, because otherwise the music year 2017 would not be fair.

Sliskovic also criticizes SDP's nomination in the “Rock national” category; these are about as far removed from the concept of a rock band as the SPD is from the chancellorship . A prize that speaks of itself as “one of the most important and renowned music awards in the world” and then sends Jason Derulo into the running as a candidate for the “Artist International” award, cannot really be regarded as renowned in 2018, especially since the The reason for his nomination is not based on an album, but on the "silly radio pause filler" Swalla . That there might be a connection between his nomination (and his possible Echo success) and his live performance at the award ceremony, "we can not even imagine ...".
There is good news in the “Newcomer national” division. With RIN, an act made it onto the shortlist that not only polarizes but also rethinks German music. In general, however, it seems that those responsible are having a hard time with the newcomer division. Or how should you explain that French Montana , who had already ranked 4th on the Billboard 200 with his debut album Excuse My French in 2013 , can now leave the Echo Awards as a potential newcomer winner in 2018? How could it be that the "Echo decision-makers" only came across DJ Khaled and wanted to name him "Newcomer of the Year" even though he has been in business for over a decade? The fact that Luis Fonsi, one of the “greatest stars of Latin Pop ”, is now being honored as a newcomer at the Echo is already a “diplomatic affront ”. Year after year the echo with such decisions only rides deeper and deeper into "insignificance". From the promised discourse with music critics nothing is to be seen for outsiders.
