Revival ( English for " revival ") is the ninth solo album of American rapper Eminem . It was released on December 15, 2017 via the labels Shady Records , Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records .

Prehistory and origin

Eminem's last studio album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was released in 2013. He then worked on the sampler Shady XV on his label Shady Records and on the soundtrack Southpaw . For the first time in October 2016, Eminem announced that they were working on his ninth studio album. He also published the song Campaign Speech , in which, among other things, he made negative comments about the then US presidential candidate Donald Trump . During 2017 it was confirmed that the rapper was working with his producer Dr. Dre working on the album. Speaking to Elton John for Interview Magazine in December 2017, Eminem stated that he had been working on Revival for over a year and had recorded around 50 songs from which he chose the best. Two days before it was released, the album was posted on the Internet by strangers.

marketing

On October 10, 2017 published Eminem during the BET Awards to Freestyle The Storm , in which he again attacked US President Donald Trump sharp and his fans asked to choose between him and Trump, bringing the promo period began to album.

Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg published a photo of Yelawolf's new album Trial by Fire on Instagram on October 25, 2017 , in which the advertisement for a supposed drug called Revival can be seen in the background on a house wall , with the E in REVIVAL as in Eminem's logo, upside down. At the same time, a website was also created on which the alleged drug is advertised and various Eminem songs are alluded to in a video and texts.

On November 8, 2017, the rapper published a picture of an alleged doctor's prescription on Twitter with the words "Walk on Water" - Take as needed. The picture also had the Revival lettering. This acted as an announcement for the first single Walk on Water , released two days later , whose chorus is sung by Beyoncé . Eminem performed with this song, accompanied by singer Skylar Gray , who wrote the lyrics of the chorus, on November 12th at the MTV Europe Music Awards and on November 18, 2017 on Saturday Night Live .

The alleged drug advertising for the album was published on November 28, 2017 on the Instagram account of Dr. Dre disbanded and announced the release of Revival for December 15, 2017. On December 5, 2017, Eminem published the official track listing on his Twitter account.

The second single Untouchable was released on December 8, 2017. On December 14, 2017 Eminem appeared with Skylar Gray on BBC Radio 1 and played Walk on Water and four older songs live. Simultaneously with the album, the song River was released as the third single on December 15, 2017 .

An extended version of Nowhere Fast was released as the fourth single on March 17, 2018. A music video for the song Framed was also released on April 3, 2018 .

content

Eminem is committed to revival with political issues that affect his home country USA (e.g. Untouchable , Like Home ), as well as personal issues (e.g. Bad Husband , Castle , Arose ) and his rap career (e.g. B. on Walk on Water , Believe ) apart. As on the previous album The Marshall Mathers LP 2, there are quite a few choruses sung, which are mainly interpreted by guest musicians.

In the first song, Walk on Water , Eminem deals with the fans' high expectations of his music, wondering whether his earlier albums are responsible for this, as they set the standard too high and his current works are always compared with them . With Believe , the rapper picks up on the first track, but shows himself more self-confident and addresses his listeners directly, who he asks whether they still believe in him. Chloraseptic, on the other hand, is a settlement with modern hip-hop in the United States, with Eminem primarily attacking the so-called mumble rap ( English to mumble " murmeln ", "mumble"). Untouchable deals with everyday racism in the United States and particularly deals with the police violence of the recent past, which often fell victim to dark-skinned people. River is about a love affair in which both partners cheat, with the woman becoming pregnant from their affair and ultimately having an abortion. In contrast, Remind Me is a humorous song in which a man confesses his love to a woman because she reminds him of himself. In Like Home , Eminem sings a hymn to the United States as his home and at the same time attacks President Donald Trump , whom he accuses of dividing the population. A very personal song is Bad Husband , in which Eminem raps about his family relationships and the contradiction of being a good father to his daughter Hailie but a bad husband to his ex-wife Kim. Tragic Endings , on the other hand, is about an unhappy love affair in which the woman puts the man under psychological pressure and both stay together, although it is not good for them.

On Framed , Eminem completely changes the subject and raps in horrorcore style, reminiscent of his album Relapse , from the perspective of a serial killer who is arrested and denies his actions. In Nowhere Fast , the rapper looks back on his career and draws parallels to the fast pace of the world, while also pointing out current dangers, such as the nuclear weapons tests in North Korea . Heat , on the other hand, is again a funny song in which the protagonist tries to win over an attractive woman with various sayings and makes numerous sexual innuendos. In Offended , Eminem makes it clear that he doesn't regret any of the insults he has hand out during his career. He attacks Donald Trump and his family again and especially raps the third verse at a very high pace. The pop song Need Me , of which a large part is sung, deals with an unhappy love affair again, in which the partners can neither with nor without each other and do not have the courage to break up. On the track In Your Head , Eminem takes a critical look at his career and especially his alter ego Slim Shady . He wonders what is sometimes going on in his head and whether he has let his private life flow too much into the lyrics just to entertain the audience.

The last two songs are very personal and deal, among other things, with Eminem's near death from a methadone overdose at the end of 2007. In Castle , the rapper addresses his daughter Hailie directly in the form of letters he writes in December 1995, 1996 and 2007, respectively. In the first letter he tells how he was looking forward to seeing her shortly before she was born and how excited at the same time, because he had hardly anything to live on at the time. A year later, Eminem tries to keep himself and the family afloat with rap, with his first album Infinite flopping, but he does not lose hope. In his last letter in 2007, the rapper apologized to his daughter for exposing so many private things to the public during his career. She should keep him in good memory in case he died, as he was heavily drug addict at the time . At the end of the song, Eminem can be heard taking a dose of pills and falling to the ground. The narrative continues in Arose : Eminem wakes up after the overdose in the hospital where he is hooked up to machines. He addresses Hailie again and apologizes that he cannot be home for Christmas and that he is afraid that he will no longer be able to accompany her further life. Eminem feels how he slowly makes his way to his best friend Proof , who was shot in 2006 and whose death he found difficult to get over. But suddenly his heart starts beating again and his breathing starts again. The beat changes back to Castle's instrumental and Eminem raps the last verse of the song with changed lyrics. This time he ended up flushing the pills down the toilet instead of taking them.

Production and samples

20 different music producers were involved in the production of Revival , with Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin acted as executive producers . Most of the instrumentals are by Rick Rubin, who produced the songs Walk on Water (together with Skylar Gray ), Remind Me , Heat and Arose . Alex da Kid provided the beats for Bad Husband (with Eminem), Tragic Endings and Need Me , while Scram Jones produced the song In Your Head . Eminem himself was also on the production of Believe (in collaboration with Luis Resto and Mr. Porter ), Like Home (with Just Blaze ), Framed (with Fredwreck ), Offended (with Illa da Producer) and Untouchable (with Mark Batson, Emile Haynie and Mr. Porter) involved. Other instrumentals come from Emile Haynie ( River ), Rock Mafia and Hit-Boy ( Nowhere Fast ), Mr. Porter ( Chloraseptic ) and DJ Khalil ( Castle ). In addition, the skits Remind Me (Intro) and Revival (Interlude) by Dr. Dre, Theron Feemster and Trevor Lawrence Jr., respectively produced by Frequency and Aalias.

Nine songs on the album contain samples of songs by other artists. The beat and chorus of the track In Your Head is based on the piece Zombie by the Irish band The Cranberries . The chorus of Remind Me is based on the song I Love Rock 'n' Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts , the title also having elements of the song PSK What Does It Mean? by Schoolly D and Bust a Move by rapper Young MC . Untouchable samples the pieces Earache My Eye by the comedy duo Cheech and Chong and Born to Roll by the rap group Masta Ace Incorporated . The Interlude Revival features elements from Human of the Year by singer Regina Spektor , and the song Framed samples the track Pilgrim by C&K Vocal. Heat contains samples from King of Rock from the rap group Run-DMC and from girls from the rap group Beastie Boys . The track Offended contains elements from In You (I Found a Love) by the singer Charles Bradley , while Arose samples the songs I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby by Barry White and The Rose by singer Bette Midler . Chloraseptic also contains elements of the song It's My Thing by the hip-hop duo EPMD .

In addition to Eminem, other artists are represented on eleven songs on the album, mainly female singers. The chorus of the song Walk on Water is sung by the American singer Beyoncé , while the pop artist Pink appears on Need Me . On Like Home , Eminem is supported by singer Alicia Keys , and the Interlude Revival is sung by Alice and the Glass Lake. The piece Bad Husband is a collaboration with the alternative rock band X Ambassadors , while the singer Skylar Gray has a guest appearance on the song Tragic Endings . The British singer Ed Sheeran can be heard on River , and the still relatively unknown rappers Phresher and Kent Jones appear on Chloraseptic and Offended respectively . Eminem also works with R&B singer Kehlani on Nowhere Fast , while singer Liz Rodrigues has a guest contribution on Castle .

Revival received mostly average ratings from critics and, above all, rather negative ratings from German media. The site Metacritic calculated from 24 reviews of English-language media an average of 50%, which corresponds to the worst average of all Eminem solo albums.

From laut.de the album two out of a possible five points received. The reviewer Stefan Johannesberg criticizes above all the rock productions by Rick Rubin, but also Eminem, whom he sees “as a parody of himself trapped in his drawer” and “stuck in the wrong rap film”. Every Run DMC album is “fresher than this sound” and Eminem apparently “ spit all energy and thoughts out of himself on the predecessor Marshall Mathers LP 2. ” In addition to “a few nice pop songs with Ed Sheeran and Pink” the last song Arose the only bright spot on the album.

On Hiphop.de it was already read in advance that Eminem could "only lose" from his position. Editor-in-chief Aria Nejati wrote that the album was a deliberate alternative to the current hip-hop zeitgeist: “When all of their lyrics blur, Em does the opposite. He raps clearer and clearer than ever. The consequence is uncomfortable, because [...] none of this is particularly musical. The motto is: If everyone just hooks, I won't do any more. ”Eminem is still at the top in terms of success, but is“ no longer the hungry underdog ”.

On the website rappers.in the sound carrier received 2.5 out of a possible six points. It is described as "a mediocre album with a few dropouts, but masked by a few good pop hooks". Eminem rapp "technically clean", but with a monotonous flow , whereby the texts sometimes seemed constructed with compulsion and served "as stirrup holders for technical flexes". The rapper's "glory years" are "finally over" and Revival is ultimately a "terribly constructed, compulsively politicized and musically uninteresting album."

The online editorial team of the newspaper Die Welt describes Revival as a "musical disaster". It is an “ingratiation to the zeitgeist”, contains too many guest contributions and mixes “too many styles of music”. The author Thore Barfuss says, “The songs seem like a disconnected sequence of many new and old Eminem motifs”, with Eminem jumping “from ultra-modern rap” to “sappy” duets. Nevertheless, he is "the technically best rapper" and has a variety of "rhymes, word games and technical variations" that "don't destroy the unsuccessful background music". The album is "strongest when it gets personal" and Eminem rapping on the relationship with his ex-wife Kim and his daughter Hailie. Above all, “the last two songs” are referred to as “Lichtblick” and “climax”.

On the online presence of the star , Eminem is called a "whitewashed verbal genius". The album is saturated with pop music and more audience-friendly than his earlier works. Nevertheless, the rapper has not "lost any of its verbal ingenuity" and can "write clever, ambiguous and extremely funny texts even at the age of 45 and rap them at high speed."

Dennis Pohl compares Eminem on Spiegel Online with a "competitive athlete after the third cruciate ligament tear - he has been looking for form in vain for years". The political starting position with Donald Trump as president would be “actually ideal” for him, but Revival consolidates the “certainty: Eminem was never an artist who had a lot to say. Rather, his texts were lessons in ventilating the irrelevant in a very clever and talented way. ”He had missed the chance“ to really give his career a new spin, an urgently needed revival ”. The productions are also criticized for being "astonishingly yesterday's sound structure" that "was thought to be innovative rap 20 years ago".

Time sees Revival as a boring “return to the crossover sound of the late nineties”, with the rapper jumping back and forth between hard and poppy tracks. Eminem is best "when he doesn't appear condemned to rap, but makes the fun of it tangible: when his old humor flashes", but these moments are"short-lived"on Revival .

Only the online edition of the FAZ rated the album more positively. The author Livia Gerster believes that Revival offers “everything that one would expect from a good film: pathos and wit, regret and hope.” Eminem does not simply rest “on pleasing hits, but gives his album a completely new, unusual one Sound. “In Your Head” and “Arose” are among the most personal and touching songs. ”The rapper is best there“ where he talks about himself, about winning and losing, getting up and moving on, about his childhood, his marriage, his daughter , his drugs.
