Eminem Presents: The Re-Up ( English for: " Eminem Presents: The Extension ") is a sampler from Eminem's label Shady Records and was also released via Interscope . It was released on December 1, 2006 and contains 22 songs, almost exclusively by artists who were under contract with Shady Records at the time.

background

The sampler was originally supposed to be released as an unofficial street mixtape, but the results convinced Eminem so much that he decided to add more songs, record everything professionally and bring an official compilation of his label onto the market. The sampler helped the then unknown artists Stat Quo , Cashis and Bobby Creekwater in particular to gain their first attention.

content

In the intro Shady Narcotics , Eminem introduces all the artists who were then signed to Shady Records . During the remix of Pistol Pistol, Obie Trice raps about the attack that he survived a few weeks earlier. Murder von Bizarre and Kuniva, on the other hand, addresses crime in Detroit . In Everything Is Shady, Cashis raps about his rise to become a popular rapper. In the title track The Re-Up by Eminem and 50 Cent, the label boss raps about his drug addiction at the time and the idea of quitting rap. While You Don't Know , Shake That, and Get Low are party tracks, other celebrities are mocked at Jimmy Crack Corn . Trapped by Proof was released posthumously and is about how he can't stop rap. In Tryin 'Ta Win it comes to the pursuit of celebrity. There He Is introduces Bobby Creekwater and We Ride for Shady and By My Side are also about the rise of an established rapper. Public Enemy # 1 is about fear of being persecuted by the government for critical texts. Ski Mask Way tells of the crime and bad life in the ghettos . The final song, No Apologies, is an announcement from Eminem to all critics that he does not regret any of his songs.

Production and samples

Most of the sampler was produced by Eminem, who acted as executive producer . He created the beats for the songs Shady Narcotics (Intro) , We're Back , Pistol Pistol (Remix) , Murder , The Re-Up , You Don't Know , Jimmy Crack Corn , Trapped , Public Enemy # 1 , Shake That (Remix) and No Apologies . He also produced the bonus song Billion Bucks . The Alchemist , who produced the beats for We Ride for Shady , There He Is and Tryin 'ta Win , is primarily responsible for the further musical background . But also lesser-known producers like Witt & Pep ( Whatever You Want , Cry Now (Shady Remix) ), Rikanatti ( Everything Is Shady , Talkin 'All That ), Focus ( By My Side ) and Disco D ( Ski Mask Way (Eminem Remix ) ) contributed some beats. In addition, Dr. Dre ( Get Low ) and Akon ( Smack That (Remix) ) one beat each.

Five tracks in the sampler contain elements from songs by other artists. For example, on the title track The Re-Up, the song In Da Club is sampled by 50 Cent for a short section . We Ride for Shady samples the North Face of Bobby Heath, Eric Peters and Robert Hunter. The title There He Is contains elements from Las Tentaciones De Georgia by Fred Bongusto and Cry Now (Shady Remix) is the play Blind Man sampled the Bobby Blue Band. The track Pistol Pistol (Remix) samples the melody of the original Pistol Pistol by D12 .

The reviews of The Re-Up were mostly average. The side Metacritic calculated from 13 Reviews of English-language media is a section of 50%.

  • At laut.de the album received two out of a possible five points. The weak beat productions in particular are criticized:

In the beginning everything promises a lot of beautiful things: Liquid piano in" We're Back "," You Don't Know "is spiced up with winds. Sometimes pretty dark - and unfortunately almost always boring, that's the stale aftertaste of Eminem's productions. [...] The overall impression remains poor. Rap technical failures are missing, as are the great moments. If at the end of the day "No Apologies" wasn't a real goosebump number, I would have had less difficulty with the rather poor grading. To melodic, melancholy strings, Eminem serves the probably strongest, because most personal number on "The Re-Up". "

  • The website Rap.de also criticizes the poor production and some rappers from Shady Records, but still awards four out of a possible five stars:

All in all [the newcomers] fit into the CD, but with the quality of this disc, that's not all positive. Stat Quo on his two solo songs "By my side" and "Get low", Bobby Creekwater on his "There he is" and Cashis on "Everything is shady", are routine, but somehow like the entire mixtape: permanently boring and in terms of rap technique, flow and voice, not varied. [...] Yes, I missed Eminem, but not the producer, but the rapper. And the production and the quality of the CD are only mediocre. "
