The Ringer ( English for " the alarm clock ") is a song by the American rapper Eminem , which was released on August 31, 2018 on his tenth studio album Kamikaze . The song reached the top 10 of the charts in various countries.

content

The intro of the piece begins with the sound of an impacting plane. In the song, Eminem mainly attacks the modern rap generation, mentioning Lil Pump and Lil Xan by name and accusing them of copying Lil Wayne . If Eminem had used Autotune on his previous album Revival , more people would have bought it. In addition, Eminem mentions that he can no longer sell beefs , as these would only make his opponents better known undeservedly. He doesn't stop at his own fans either, as they would always compare his new music with his album The Marshall Mathers LP . If he got back to the style of the album he would sound like any other rapper as this album influenced everyone. Critics of his last album Revival are further targets of the rapper. Finally, Eminem also attacks US President Donald Trump . He calls him " Agent Orange " and accuses him of having sent the Secret Service to ask if he was a terrorist or had any connections with them. On the other hand, Eminem has positive comments about the rappers Joyner Lucas , Kendrick Lamar , J. Cole and Big Sean .

production

In the song, the beat is changed after 4:32 minutes. The first part was produced by the music producer Illa da Producer, while Ronny J created the second part. There is also an interpolation of the song Ooouuu by rapper Young MA, who is also listed as the songwriter of The Ringer .

reception

The Ringer received positive reviews from XXL magazine, for example : “The approach could smell bitterness, but one cannot deny that Eminem fills these six minutes with lyrical and acrobatic skills.” But there was also more negative criticism: Marc Hogan, author at Pitchfork magazine , says the song is "lyrically clever, but still doesn't make any sense."
