The Slim Shady LP ( Slim Shady refers to Eminem's alter ego ) is the second solo album by the American rapper Eminem after the underground album Infinite . It was published on February 23, 1999 via Dr. Dres label Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records and marks the beginning of Eminem's commercial success.
Prehistory and origin
Eminem was a relatively unsuccessful and only locally known rapper in the mid-1990s . After his neglected first album Infinite , he released the Slim Shady EP in 1997 , which earned him some good reviews, on the underground label Web Entertainment owned by the Bass Brothers . Dr. Dre , already an influential hip-hop producer at the time, was leaked to Eminem's demo tape through Jimmy Iovine . After hearing it, Dre was convinced of the rapper's talent and decided to work with Eminem. Eminem signed a recording deal with Aftermath Entertainment and production of The Slim Shady LP began immediately .
The single My Name Is was recorded on the first day of recording. For much of the admission process, Eminem was under the influence of ecstasy . Several songs on the album were taken over from the Slim Shady EP .
content
The album, like all of Eminem's following albums, is characterized by his typical style. On The Slim Shady LP , Eminem slips into the role of his alter ego Slim Shady more often than on later releases, in order to devote himself to controversial topics such as violence, drugs or sex in mostly highly exaggerated ironic ways. The very first official single, My Name Is , in which Eminem introduces himself as Slim Shady and raps about his life in a very exaggerated way, is the best example of this. Other tracks that are mainly characterized by controversial lyrics and irony are the underground single Just Don't Give a Fuck as well as Brain Damage , As the World Turns , Still Don't Give a Fuck and the bonus song Get You Mad . At the song Guilty Conscience , Eminem and Dr. Dre as the good and bad side of the conscience of several people and try to influence their actions in their direction. In '97 Bonnie & Clyde , Eminem expresses love for his daughter and dislike for his ex-wife: he drives the daughter to the beach to get rid of her mother's body. Role Model is an ironic song in which Eminem pulls his role model function as a now famous rapper through the cocoa. A typical party song can also be found on the LP ( Cum on Everybody ), as well as songs about drugs ( My Fault , I'm Shady ). In Bad Meets Evil , Eminem and Royce da 5'9 ″ take on the role of two bandits. In addition to these songs, there are also serious songs that deal with Eminem's poverty and the problems associated with it ( If I Had , Rock Bottom ). The bonus tracks Hazardous Youth and Greg are a cappella freestyles.
The songs If I Had , '97 Bonnie & Clyde ( Just the Two of Us ) and Just Don't Give a Fuck were already released on the Slim Shady EP and partly with a different beat ( Just Don't Give a Fuck ) or other title ( '97 Bonnie & Clyde ) taken over on The Slim Shady LP .
Production and samples
The Bass Brothers , who had worked with him even before Eminem's discovery, are primarily responsible for the production . They produced the beat for Rock Bottom as well as with Eminem as co-producer Brain Damage , If I Had , '97 Bonnie & Clyde , My Fault , Cum on Everybody , Just Don't Give a Fuck , As the World Turns , I'm Shady , Bad Meets Evil and Still Don't Give a Fuck . Although Dr. Dre only produced the pieces My Name Is , Guilty Conscience (in collaboration with Eminem) and Role Model (in collaboration with Mel-Man ), he was always highlighted in public as executive producer , since Dres Name in contrast to the comparatively unknown Bass Brothers was much more effective in the media. The background music for the Skits Lounge , Ken Kaniff and Soap comes from Jeff Bass. The bonus track Get You Mad was produced by Sway and King Tech.
Seven tracks on the album contain elements of songs by other artists. The single My Name Is samples the songs I Got The by Labi Siffre and I Don't Love You by Millie Jackson . Go Home Pigs by Ronald Stein is sampled at Guilty Conscience . The track '97 Bonnie & Clyde includes elements of Just the Two of Us by Grover Washington, Jr. Cum On Everybody samples Gimme What You Got by Le Pamplemouse and Rock Bottom includes a sample of Summertime by Big Brother & The Holding Company. Elements of Curtis Mayfield's Pusherman song also feature in I'm Shady , and Bad Meets Evil samples Me & My Girlfriend by 2Pac and Modaji by Dave Grusin .

Guest Posts
On The Slim Shady LP only four guest rappers are represented on songs. Eminem's producer and mentor Dr. Dre appears on the single Guilty Conscience , while If I Had features the rather unknown singer Kristie Abete. As with later Eminem albums, R&B singer Dina Rae appears on track 13 ( Cum on Everybody ). The Detroit rapper Royce da 5'9 ″ has a guest post on Bad Meets Evil . Last but not least, the rapper King Tech appears in the bonus song Get You Mad . In addition, Eminem's producers, the Bass Brothers , his manager Paul Rosenberg, as well as Zoe Winkler and Aristotle can be heard on various skits.

The album received mostly positive reviews.
- In laut.de got The Slim Shady LP three out of a possible five points. Eminem's lyrical strengths are praised, but the album is accused of being too commercial:
“ Even the first release was a hit, but overall the Slim Shady LP was almost too professionally produced. The album is good, the lyrics are awesome and the beats are right too, but there is too much commercialism in all of this, maybe even a touch of 2Pac's white brother. […] G-Funk, Money, Bitches, there is too much of this image in this CD to do it really well. "
- On cdstarts.de, when the 20th anniversary edition was released, the album was rated 8.5 out of a possible ten points. It is much more innovative than the rapper's newer releases:
“ [Eminem] created a whole new style of rap that didn't grow with the aggressiveness of later works. Instead, Eminem's indescribable pun blossomed, degenerating between genius (“My name is”), madness (“Ken Kaniff”), sex (“Cum on everybody”) and loads of drugs (“Brain damage”). Thus “The Slim Shady LP” stands for the moment when US rap took on a new, exciting twist and ushered in a second spring for a genre that is characterized by ups and downs like no other. "
