Nail in the Coffin is a 2002 disstrack by the US rapper Eminem against the rapper Benzino .

background

In September 2002, Benzino dissed Eminem in a freestyle called Pull Your Skirt Up for DJ Kay Slay's mixtape series Drama Hour . He then published the title Die Another Day , in which he referred to Eminem as "Rap Hitler " and threatened Eminem's daughter Hailie with death. At the same time he began to stir up the mood against Eminem as co-editor of the hip-hop magazine The Source . The magazine described Eminem as a racist and compared him to Vanilla Ice . In November 2002 Eminem released the songs The Sauce and Nail in the Coffin in response to Benzino's attacks. Both songs were also part of the mixtape Invasion !! , mixed by DJ Green Lantern , which contained several disstracks against Benzino and The Source. Also D12 and 50 Cent and his G-Unit took part in the Beef .

Music and lyrics

Nail in the Coffin contains a number of attacks on Benzino. Among other things, Eminem makes fun of his age and his failed rap career. In one line he describes him as " half white ". He also portrayed The Source as a dishonorable company: Benzino awarded cover stories in exchange for guest appearances on his albums. With that he picked up an older rumor. Eminem also revealed that the magazine belongs to a white man.

The song itself has a simple beat with a hook at the beginning and end:

“I don't wanna be like this / I don't really wanna hurt no feelings / But I'm only being real when I say / Nobody wants to hear they grandfather rap (nope) / And old men have heart attacks / And I don't wanna be responsible for that, so / Put the mic down and walk away / You can still have a little bit of dignity. "

“I don't want to be like that / I don't want to hurt any feelings / But it's true: Nobody wants to hear their grandfather rap (nope) / Old men get heart attacks / and I don't want to be responsible for that, so / Put down the microphone and just go / then you can keep a last bit of dignity "

aftermath

After Nail in the Coffin , the dispute escalated further and there were more disstracks until things got quieter in 2005. Eminem benefited from the beef much more than Benzino. If he had previously only attacked other artists like Mariah Carey , the confrontation with Benzino was the first at eye level and with the same means. There were other Disstracks, including by Eminem, but Nail in the Coffin remained the best known. Many fans and critics think that Eminem destroyed Benzino with this track and see the Disstrack as the ultimate statement that lives up to its title (" Coffin Nail "). He's always on top lists when it comes to the best hip hop disstracks.

While Eminem benefited enormously from the beef artistically, Benzino disappeared from the public eye a short time later. He lost his job at The Source, particularly because of the beef, and his rap career also petered out. Benzino later apologized for the beef and said he was misguided. He was the first to play the race card and he regrets it deeply. Today he can also see Eminem's influence on the multiculturalism in hip-hop, back then he was an angry man who was afraid for "his" culture.
