Benzino (rapper)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raymond Scott (born July 18, 1965 in Boston ) also known as Benzino or Ray Dog , is an American rapper , record producer and co-owner of the hip-hop magazine The Source .

Life

Scott was, initially as Ray Dog, from 1986 to 1998 a member of the rap formation The Almights RSO . They released a single " One In Tha Chamba " on Tommy Boy Entertainment and were later signed to Rap-a-Lot Records . There they released their first album " Doomsday: Forever RSO " in 1996 . After the breakup, Scott was together with Twice Thou as Made Men . This led to a collaboration with Master P . As of 2001, Scott was, temporarily unofficial, co-owner of The Source and signed as a solo artist with Motown Records . There he released his solo debut album The Benzino Project . The album featured guest appearances by P. Diddy , Snoop Dogg , Bobby Brown , Pink and Teddy Riley . Although it received positive reception from critics, especially its own magazine, it was unsuccessful commercially, with 75,000 copies sold. One month after the release, Motown ended their collaboration with Scott.

In an article in the American men's magazine GQ in December 2001, the long-standing relationship between Source founder Davis May and Scott became known, as well as his participation in the magazine. Motown Records demanded that the Benzino Project's outstanding costs of $ 770,000 be offset by advertising space in the magazine. The master tapes from Scott's album went to the Surrender Records label and were released again in 2002 as The Benzino Remix Project without major changes .

Scott began to attack the white rapper Eminem , who was mostly badly rated in The Source, with the disstrack " Pull up your Skirt " from the album Redemption in 2003 . This included comparisons with Vanilla Ice , allegations that Scott was the real discoverer of Eminem and therefore he was guilty of his fault. With 20,000 copies sold, the album published by Elektra was also commercially unsuccessful. Eminem was accused of racism through the magazine. Eminem responded with several disstracks in which he u. a. attacked the editorial integrity of the source.

After the magazine's advertising revenue fell dramatically in 2005 due to a boycott of the biggest music labels, Scott announced his withdrawal, but came back after just a week. Ultimately, along with David Mays, he was removed from all positions by the magazine's board of directors. The reason given was the massive damage they both caused to the magazine's reputation.

His album Arch Nemesis , released independently in 2005, was barely sold, as was the 2007 album The Antidote .
