Edward Theodore "Teddy" Riley (born October 8, 1967 in Harlem , New York ) is an American singer-songwriter and producer and is considered the founder of New Jack Swing . Through his collaboration with artists such as Michael Jackson , Bobby Brown , Doug E. Fresh , Keith Sweat , Heavy D , Jane Child etc. and as a member of the groups Guy and Blackstreet , Riley significantly influences the styles of contemporary R&B , hip-hop and the Pop music .

Life

Teddy Riley grew up in Harlem , New York . At the age of three he started playing drums, at the age of five he also played guitar and trumpet and at the age of eight the piano . Riley later played in various bands in New York. He produced Kool Moe Dee's single "Go See the Doctor" in 1986 . The song was distributed through an independent label and reached number 89 on the American Billboard Hot 100 music chart .

Career

In 1987 Riley co-founded the R&B group Guy with Aaron Hall and Timmy Gatling . With their music, Guy pioneered the New Jack Swing . Riley already used this style in his collaborations with Johnny Kemp ( Just Got Paid ), Bobby Brown ( My Prerogative ) and Keith Sweat ( Make It Last Forever ), among others . In 1989 Riley Big Daddy produced Kane's "I Get the Job Done" and other work for The Jacksons , The Winans and James Ingram .

On the recommendation of Michael Jackson's longtime producer Quincy Jones , Riley made Jackson's 1991 album Dangerous as lead producer . It is the New Jack Swing's most successful album with 32 million units sold.

After Guy broke up in 1992, Riley produced the second album by Wreckx-N-Effect , entitled Hard or Smooth . In the process, Riley discovered the Neptunes , who were involved in the production of the Wreckx-N-Effects hit single "Rump Shaker". In late 1992, Riley formed his second group called BLACKstreet . The group released some hits like "No Diggity" (1996, with Dr. Dre and Queen Pen ), "Don't Leave Me" (1997) and "Girlfriend / Boyfriend" (1999, with Janet Jackson , Eve and Ja Rule ) . By 2011 the group broke up several times and came back together.

In 2008, he had to sell his Virginia studio to pay off his $ 1 million tax debt.

In 2009, Riley appeared again with Guy at the BET Awards. In the same year Riley worked with Amerie and Robin Thicke on their albums. Working with Snoop Dogg on the album Ego Trippin ' , Riley became part of the production team for supergroup QDT . Teddy and Taja Riley produced the song " Teeth " from Lady Gaga's EP The Fame Monster .

On December 10, 2010, the posthumous album Michael by the singer Michael Jackson was released , in whose production Teddy Riley was also involved.

Riley has been active on the South Korean music market since 2010 . Riley worked with Jay Park on the track "Demon". He later produced the first EP for the girl group RaNia . In 2011 he produced the title song of the same name from the album The Boys with the group Girls' Generation . The album and the song reached number 1 on the South Korean charts. The song was also released in English and wants to conquer the western music markets with The Boys and Riley's support.
