Girls' Generation ( Hangeul : 소녀 시대 ; Hanja : 少女 時代 ; rev. Romanized : Sonyeo Sidae , also: So Nyuh Shi Dae ) is a South Korean girl group consisting of eight members that was founded in 2007 by SM Entertainment . The group is often referred to as GG , SNSD or SoShi ( als ) as an abbreviation for their English and Korean names. In Japan the group is called Shōjo Jidai ( 少女 時代 ). Even after more than ten years in the Korean music business, they are still considered the "Nation's Girl Group", and many Koreans describe their success as unique. That is why many talent agencies try to orient their groups according to girls' generation and use them as a model.

The Girls' Generation-TTS (TaeTiSeo) subgroup , which consists of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun, has existed since 2012 . Her first single was Twinkle.

On September 5, 2018, a new subgroup with Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona called “Oh GG!” Made their debut with their single “Lil 'touch”.

history

2007–2008: debut and first album

In July 2007, the nine members of Girls' Generation were introduced by SM Entertainment , starting with Yoona on July 6th. On the following days, Tiffany , Yuri , Hyoyeon , Sooyoung , Seohyun , Taeyeon , Jessica and Sunny were introduced one after the other . The oldest member, Taeyeon, was selected as the band leader . The members were all previously part of the talent agency SM Entertainment and were trained in singing, dancing and acting over several years and were finally cast for the group over a period of around two years. Even during this time before their debut, some band members were already active as actresses, dancers, models or presenters.

On August 5, 2007, the band had their first appearance on the music show Inkigayo with their debut single " Dasi Mannan Segye " (" 다시 만난 세계 ", "Into the New World"). The single, which was released in South Korea on August 2, 2007, sold over 70,000 copies. In addition to the song "Into the New World", the single also contained the tracks "Beginning" and " 소원 " (" Sowon "), which was later renamed "Honey" for their first album Girls' Generation ; Based on the original song title, the band's official fan club is called S ♡ NE ( 소원 , sowon ). The group first performed outside of Korea on May 17, 2008 at the Korean Music Festival in Los Angeles . In August 2008 the band went on tour with BoA , TVXQ , Super Junior and other artists from the record company SM Entertainment. Concerts took place in South Korea , Thailand and China .

During the Dream Concert on June 7, 2008, various foreign fan clubs including ELF ( Super Junior ), Cassiopeia ( TVXQ ) and Triple S ( SS501 ) held a silent protest by turning off their glow sticks as Girls' Generation performed. The South Korean media criticized this dispute among fan clubs. The singer and actress Nam Gyu-ri also called for a change in the South Korean fan culture and supported the girls' generation.

In October 2008, Mnet began broadcasting a reality soap opera called Factory Girl (" 소녀 시대 의 팩토리 걸 "). The show is dedicated to the Girls' Generation group, with members working for the fashion magazine Elle Girl .

The group took a break from the music scene and appeared in many programs and in advertising, e.g. B. for MapleStory and Mabinogi .

2009: Gee , Sowoneul Malhaebwa and start of the first Asian tour

On January 7, 2009, the group returned with their first EP The First Mini Album - Gee . At the same time, the music video for " Gee " was released. The download version immediately reached the top position on the download charts.

The band appeared with "Gee" in several music shows and reached first place in all major music charts. The show was replaced by another Girls' Generation reality show called "Himnae-ra Him (Cheer Up!)", In which the girls cheer up hard-working people amid the economic recession. The show was canceled after two episodes as the singers were busy releasing their second mini-album. On June 23, 2009 the program " 소녀 시대 의 헬로 베이비 " ( Hello Baby) started on KBS Joy, in which the group looks after a child and learns what it is like to be a mother. They take care of the boy Jo Gyeong-san ( 조경산 ). Due to its high popularity, the show was expanded to 22 episodes.

The second EP, Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie) ( 소원 을 말해봐 , in German roughly “nenn mir dein Wunsch”) was released on June 29, 2009 four days late. Since the Japanese A6M fighter aircraft , which was used as a kamikaze aircraft in World War II, was on the cover , SM Entertainment decided to revise the cover. In the music video for " Sowoneul Malhaebwa ", the nine members appear in naval uniforms.

2010: Oh! Run Devil Run , debut in Japan and Hoot

At the beginning of January 2010, SM Entertainment announced that the group would take a break and return in February 2010 with a new studio album. Finally the album Oh! but on January 28, 2010. The album and the title song of the same name “ Oh! “Immediately stormed the South Korean charts. The girls also gave two encore concerts on their Asian tour in Seoul on February 27th and 28th.

On March 17, 2010, the single " Run Devil Run " was released for download, which promptly reached first place on the Korean online music charts. With the new song, the group embarked on a new, more adult path.

On September 8, 2010, her Japanese debut single " Genie " was released in Japan and South Korea. "Genie" is the Japanese version of the hit "Sowoneul Malhaebwa". The single contains both versions. The single went straight to number four on the Oricon charts with 45,000 copies sold in the first week. More than 100,000 units of the single had been sold by the end of October, which is why it was awarded gold status by the Recording Industry Association of Japan .

Girls 'Generations' second Japanese single, " Gee ", was released on October 20, 2010 , after the music video was released on October 6. The single went straight to number 2 in the Japanese Oricon charts. After three weeks, “Gee” also received RIAJ gold status .

The group's third mini-album was released on October 27, 2010 and is titled Hoot . The EP contains five different tracks, including "Mistake", the lyrics of which are from Yuri. The song "Hoot" was released on October 25th via various music portals and went straight to number 1 on the South Korean Gaon Charts. The mini-album reached third place on the 2010 South Korean annual sales charts with 163,066 units sold.

On November 1st, 2010 at a press conference in Seoul, Girls' Generation and Kim Young-min, CEO of SM Entertainment , announced that the group would continue to focus on the Asian music market in the future. Due to the current success in Japan, the group is seen as the "storm top" of the so-called second Korean wave .

On December 9, 2010, the group received three awards at the prestigious Golden Disk Awards . This is how their album Oh! was awarded the prize for the best album of the year and the group itself received the popularity award. The status as the most popular group in South Korea in the year is also underlined by a poll published by Gallup Korea on December 21, 2010 , according to which girls' generation are the most popular artists of the year.

2011: "Mr. Taxi “, Japan tour and first Japanese album Girls' Generation and The Boys

On January 5, 2011 , Girls' Generation received the award for Best Newcomer at the 25th Gold Disc Awards , the most commercially significant prize in the Japanese music industry . Girls' Generation won four awards at the 20th High1 Seoul Music Awards on January 20, 2011, including the Grand Prix ( Daesang ). This makes the group the first girl group to win this award twice in a row.

The Asia Today newspaper ranks Girls' Generation in the list of the most influential people in South Korea in 2011 at number 44. The band was also voted Best Idol Group of the Decade by South Korean music experts . Girls' Generation also had a cameo on an episode of the Japanese television series Sazae-san 3 , which has aired on Fuji TV since 1969 . According to a survey by Forbes Korea, Girls' Generation are currently the most popular stars in South Korea.

On April 27, 2011 their Japanese single " MR.TAXI / Run Devil Run " was released.

The group's Japan tour, the Arena Tour 2011, began on May 31, 2011 . One day later, on June 1st, their first Japanese album of the same name, Girls' Generation, was released . This will be presented during the tour, which ended on July 18th. The tour had a total of 140,000 visitors.

2012: Acting activities and TaeTiSeo

In 2012, members Yoona, Sooyoung and Yuri starred in various Korean television dramas, and they and other members also had various guest roles and cameo appearances.

After there had been rumors before, SM Entertainment announced the sub-unit Girls' Generation - TaeTiSeo in April . The grouping consists of the three members Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun. 2013: I Got a Boy and second tour of Japan

2015: Catch Me if You Can and Lion Heart

On August 12th, the fifth studio album Lion Heart was announced. On August 18, 2015, the first six titles were released, including the single Lion Heart . Twelve hours later, another six tracks from the album were released, with the second single from the album You Think .

2017: 10th anniversary with Holiday Night

In August 2017, SNSD released their sixth studio album Holiday Night as part of their 10th band anniversary . Concept and marketing

For each theme song of a single, an EP or an album, the group dedicates itself to a different concept. In 2012 the girls were advertising media for the “3D TV Entertainment” series from LG Electronics , which operated the campaign worldwide. This alone made the group more and more internationally known. They were seen in almost every consumer electronics wholesale market at the time.
