overview

Girls' Generation performing with Genie in June 2010

"Genie" was originally written by the Norwegian songwriting team Dsign Music and Fridolin Nordsø Schjoldan. Originally the song was titled "I Just Wanna Dance" and was written in English . After the label SM Entertainment acquired the rights to the song, they commissioned Yoo Young-jin to write Korean lyrics for the composition.

In 2010, a Japanese-language version of the title was published in Japan under the name "Genie".

The passage in the text " DJ. Put it back on! " Is particularly noticeable, as it changes especially during live performances. The singer Tiffany sings the text of this line in a different form depending on the country and venue. In most cases, she replaces " DJ " with the location, country or event name. The back part is also less common, for example at a New Year's Special on MBC where she sings " DJ! Happy new year! "

Awards and chart placements

In Japan, the single "Genie" was awarded gold status by the Recording Industry Association of Japan for more than 100,000 units sold. ITunes Japan awarded the single Breakthrough Album of 2010 .

Plagiarism and cover

In 2009, before Girls' Generations “Genie” was released, the Uzbek singer Dineyra released the song “Raqsga Tushgin”. Both songs use the same melody. According to the Universal Music Publishing Group, Dineyra's version is plagiarism.

On May 19, 2010, the Dutch singer Nathalie Makoma released the song "I Just Wanna Dance", a cover of Girls' Generations "Genie". She uses the original English text of the songwriter.

An English version was also released on June 3, 2011 by the British singer CJ Lewis .
