" Mr. Taxi " is a song by the South Korean girls ' group Girls' Generation from 2011. It was released on April 27, 2011 as the single MR. TAXI / Run Devil Run released. This is the group's third Japanese single after “ Genie ” and “ Gee ”.

The single MR.TAXI / Run Devil Run was originally due to be released on April 13, 2011. However, due to the Tōhoku earthquake and its aftermath, the publication was postponed by two weeks. In addition, SM Entertainment decided to donate part of the sales generated by the single to the Japanese Red Cross .

The single was released by Nayutawave Records in three different editions: Normal Edition , Limited Pressing and Deluxe First Press Limited Edition . Both of the latter come with a DVD and a photo book. In addition, the Deluxe First Press Limited Edition has a different cover and comes with a trading card. "Mr. Taxi ”is the first song of the Girls' Generation that was not first published in Korean, as was previously the case with“ Genie ”,“ Gee ”and“ Run Devil Run ”, but in Japanese.

To promote the single, the Japanese music video for " Run Devil Run " was broadcast for the first time on April 9, 2011 . A Japanese version of the song was released back in January.

Music style and content

With "Mr. Taxi ”is a dance , synth and J-pop song. The song is sung in Japanese, with some English and Korean expressions.

Music video and choreography

The music video was recorded on April 12th and 13th, 2011. Directed by Hideaki Sunaga ( 須 永 秀 明 ). On April 22nd at 4:50 a.m. Japanese time, the television station Mezamashi TV showed for the first time excerpts from the music video for “Mr. Taxi". Finally, a dance version of the music video was released on April 26 by Universal Music Japan via YouTube . On April 28, the “normal” music video was broadcast on television, which differs only slightly from the dance version.

In the video, the nine band members wear yellow and black costumes that are supposed to be reminiscent of taxi drivers.

The music video and especially the choreography received a lot of praise. The choreography for the song comes from Rino Nakasone.

Live performances

Her first live performance of “Mr. Taxi “had Girls' Generation on May 13, 2011 on TV Asahi's Music Station, a Japanese music show . The group performs the song in Korean on their 2nd Asia Tour ( 2011 Girls' Generation Tour ), which began in Seoul on July 23, 2011.

successes

Immediately after its release, the song reached number 1 on the Recochoku ringtone charts in Japan. In addition, "Mr. Taxi “Number 1 on the real-time download charts of the South Korean music portal Bugs! . The song reached number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 . The song reached number 10 in the South Korean Mnet charts.
