Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation ( MBC ) is one of the three largest broadcasters in South Korea .
history
In 1959, the Busan Munhwa Bangsong radio station ( Busan Culture Broadcasting Corporation ) was founded in Busan . The radio station was owned by Jeong Hwan-ok and Kim Sang-yong. Jeong suggested that Kim start a radio station; at the time, Japanese broadcasters dominated South Korean broadcasting. On April 15, 1959, MBC became the first private broadcaster in South Korea.
From the beginning, the station had to struggle with financial problems. In September 1959, MBC was sold to Kim Ji-tae, the owner of the Busan Daily . Kim saved the station and added a station in Seoul to MBC in 1961 .
However, Park Chung-hee accuses Kim of corruption. In May 1962 he gave both his station and his newspaper to the May 16 Scholarship Foundation . On August 8, 1969, the station began broadcasting on television. With Chun Doo-hwan as president, the South Korean media policy changed and so in 1980 many radio and television stations were closed. MBC was taken over by the government. In 1981, 70% of the shares in MBC were taken over by the public broadcaster KBS .
In 1987, there were democratic reforms in South Korea and MBC again became a private broadcaster without government influence. In 2011 the station had around 4,000 employees.
