Oricon KK ( Japanese オ リ コ ン 株式会社 , Orikon Kabushiki kaisha ) is a company that regularly publishes information about the Japanese music industry. The name is most likely associated with the Japanese Oricon charts, which Oricon publishes in Oricon style . The name Oricon comes from the English words " Ori ginal Con fidence."
The annual charts consist of all record sales that were counted between mid-December of the previous year and this year (at that time an “Oricon year” ran from the beginning of December to the end of November). An "Oricon year" has only 51 weeks, in contrast to the calendar year with 52 weeks. The last week of December and the first week of January are merged.
Few European or American artists have made it to number 1 on the Japanese charts since 1967. The best-selling non-Japanese song is Beautiful Sunday by Daniel Boone (released 1976). Since 1980 there have only been five other non-Japanese # 1 successes in the charts: I'm in the Mood For Dancing by The Nolans (1980), Flashdance… What a Feeling by Irene Cara (1983), To Love You More by Celine Dion and Kryzler & Kompany (1995), La-La-La Love Song by Toshinobu Kubota and Naomi Campbell and Candle in the Wind '97 by Elton John (1997).
history
In 1967 Original Confidence, the predecessor of Oricon, was founded by Sōkō Koike. In November of the same year, the company began preliminary single sales charts, and on January 4, 1968, the first Japanese Hit Parade, called Original Confidence, officially started. In 1992 the company name was changed to "Oricon" and seven years later Oricon split up into individual subsidiaries.
