Glay is a Japanese rock band . The group was founded in 1988 and became famous in 1994. Their music is rooted in pop-rock , and there are also influences from punk , electronic music and ska .

The band consists of Takuro Kubo (leader, songwriting, rhythm guitar), Teru Teruhiko Kobashi (vocals), Jiro Yoshihito Wayama (bass) and Hisashi Tonomura (lead guitar). Regular guest members are Toshi Nagai (drums) and Masahide Sakuma (keyboard).

history

Early years

Kubo, Tonomura, and Kobashi were students in Hakodate High School when they decided to perform together. In 1988 Kubo and Kobashi founded Glay with some friends. The band name is an incorrect spelling for "gray". You don't want to be black (stands for rock ) or white (stands for pop ), you want to pursue your own musical direction.

Teru was initially a drummer, but was appointed singer in the summer of the same year by the other members, who were very impressed by his singing. Tonomura initially took part in performances sporadically, but primarily pursued his own musical interests with his punk band Ari . This dissolved in 1989, whereupon he joined GLAY as a third permanent member.

The following year the three decided to go to Tokyo , capital of Japan and the Japanese music industry. Wayama, a friend of Kubo, joined as a bassist. In this constellation and with changing drummers, they played in clubs and recorded demos. The costly life in Tokyo was financed with several odd jobs (construction, supermarket, amusement arcades). At times the band members lived in a shared apartment.

On October 17th, 1993 they played at the Ichikawa Club GIO , where Yoshiki was also present, leader of X Japan and producer. He offered them an independent contract with his label Extasy Records after the performance . It didn't take long before GLAY switched to the major label Platinum Records , where they became better known with their first hit, Rain .

1994-2004

Their popularity grew, their fourth single Freeze my love made it to 19th place on the Oricon charts, their first album Speed Pop climbed to number 8. Their first number-one hit came in 1996 with their second album Beat Out! . In 1997 they released their hit single However , which is said to be their best known work to date. Review - Best of Glay from the summer of the same year was Japan's best-selling album at the time, with 4 million records sold, and in 2007 it was still number 3. Many tours and other releases followed.

On July 31, 1999, Glay held the Glay Expo 1999 Survival Concert at Makuhari Messe in front of 200,000 people, making it the largest concert event in Japan. In 2001 and 2004 two further expos followed, where the visitor record could be topped. The Glay Expo 2004 was organized on the occasion of their 10th band anniversary.

Then the band decided to take a break. During this time the members pursued various projects of their own.

Re: Birth 2006

In February 2006, Glay returned with a gig at Zepp Tokyo and three at Nippon Budokan , which were called Re-birth: Rock 'n' Roll Swindle .

In July 2006 the new single G4 was released, which was again much more rock than many of the songs before their break. A major media campaign promoted her comeback in the music world. In July, she teamed up with ex BOØWY singer Kyosuke Himuro together to answer to create. In August 2006, GLAY took part in the Southern All Stars Summer Concert Mujintō alongside various other bands . Her first ballad that year was titled Natsuoto / Hen na Yume -Thousand Dreams and was released in September. The song became the theme song for the TBS TV show Koi suru Hanikami . They then went on their Rock 'n' Roll Swindle -Re-Birth- tour in November , which ran until the beginning of 2007.

In January, the new single 100 Man Kai no Kiss and the new album Love is Beautiful followed . Again they went on tour and continued to provide their fans with their latest compositions. Jiro's band The Predators played at the Rising Sun Rock Festival in Ezo , while Teru and Hisashi performed with their band Rally at the Buck-Tick Fest 2007 .

2010

After GLAY had already been able to look back on 15 years of band history in 2009, they did not stop in 2010 either and on April 1st they released the new song Apologize , which after the title LET ME BE is again offered primarily for download. Glay will also open their own YouTube channel on April 9th. Along with this announcement, the dates for a new Japan-wide tour will also be announced.

Glay in numbers

The Best of Album Review is the Guinness record holder in Japan with five million CDs sold . A lively fan base is organized in the Happy Swing fan club . Concerts are usually sold out after a short time.
