Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (also abbreviated TMGE ) was a Japanese garage punk band that formed in 1991 and disbanded in 2003. In a list of the 100 best Japanese musicians by HMV, she ranks 77th.

Career

The band was founded in 1991 by the four students Futoshi Abe, Yūsuke Chiba, Kazuyuki Kuhara and Kōji Ueno. They played in small clubs for several years before producing their first album Wonder Style in London in 1995 with Chris Brown, who had worked for Radiohead among others .

They were signed to Triad, a sub-label of Nippon Columbia . After the release of the album Chicken Zombies in 1997 a tour of the same name followed in 36 Japanese cities, in the same year they performed at the Fuji Rock Festival . There were also 5 performances in Great Britain, followed by more in 1999. In 2000 the band also played in Austria and France.

In 2002 the musicians paused and released a best-of album before switching to the Island Records label . The new records were accompanied in 2003 by the announcement that the band would split up on October 11th 2003 after the tour was over.

The singer Yūsuke Chiba founded the band "Rosso" in 2002, which existed until 2006. Since 2006 he has been singing on "The Birthday".

On July 22nd, 2009 the guitarist Futoshi Abe died of a brain hemorrhage.
