The Dubai Monorail is a privately built monorail system based on the Alweg system for the city of Dubai ( United Arab Emirates ) .

Planning and history

The total of seven planned routes are to begin near important junctions or directly at stations of the Dubai Metro , in order to serve concentrated settlements or interesting destinations with relatively short branch lines. In 2005, a private joint venture between Japanese and local companies was established to build the Dubai Monorail. As with the Dubai Metro, the Japanese companies under the project leadership of Marubeni took over the planning and technical side, while the local companies ( Nakheel ) took over the project management. They are also responsible for building the route.

The monorail system - like most of the Dubai Metro routes - is run on viaducts . The driverless vehicles also cross bodies of water, which is important for the many artificial islands , bays and canals off the coast of Dubai.

Route network

The construction of the first 5.45 km long stretch from the Gateway Palm to the external hotel complex " The Palm Atlantis Dubai " began in 2006 and opened on April 30, 2009. It has two intermediate stations ( Palm Mall and Trump Hotel & Tower - both are not yet open). The line's capacity is 2,400 people per hour / 40,000 per day. On the land side, the route is connected by bus lines, taxis and the Dubai tram . However, there is a long walk through a multi-storey car park between the tram terminus and that of the monorail. So far, the use of the route has been disappointing: Due to the economic slump and the inconvenient landside connection, the short train usually runs completely below its possible capacity. To make matters worse, the private monorail does not belong to the tariff structure of the Dubai transport association , so the trips have to be paid for additionally. Therefore, at the moment only two - instead of the originally planned four three-part trains that were built by Hitachi - are in use. As a rule, only one train is on the way, which runs the route every 20 minutes. The second train is only used at peak times. The Dubai monorail system has so far been of practically no importance.

Other planned routes

An extension of the existing route to the Red Line of the Dubai Metro is planned. The other routes of the Dubai Monorail should be ready for use by approx. 2018, depending on the respective construction progress and the needs of the areas approached or major projects. Due to the financial crisis, however, no construction work has been carried out since the opening of the first line (status: 2011). In 2016, only one line is in operation.
