The Red Line ( Red Line ; Arabic الخط الأحمر, DMG al-ḫaṭṭ al-aḥmar ) is one of the two currently operated subway lines of the Dubai Metro in Dubai . It is 52.1 km long and extends from the port of Jebel Ali ( UAE Exchange station ) to the Rashidiyya district ( Rashidiya station ), which is near Dubai Airport . 4.7 km of the route run in the tunnel.

history

The Red Line was the first underground line within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) area. The opening had to be postponed several times because the schedule was not adhered to. Finally, on September 9, 2009 at 9:09 p.m. ( 9:09 p.m. on September 9, 2009 ) there was a partial opening with ten of a total of 29 stations. At the beginning of January 2010, the Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station followed on the occasion of the opening of the Burj Khalifa . Seven stations were opened on April 25, 2010, and then another three on May 16, 2010. On October 15, 2010 five stations were added and finally in March 2011 the terminus at Jebel Ali (today: UAE Exchange ). The Danube station (previously Jebel Ali Industrial ) has also been open since December 12, 2012, and the Energy station since September 30, 2013 .

Infrastructure

The red line has only four stations located in the tunnel . The corresponding tunnels (including those under Dubai Creek ) were built under the surface using shield driving . The rest of the route is mostly elevated as an elevated railway along Sheikh Zayed Road .

The Union station in Deira is one of the two crossing points of the Red Line and the Green Line and is the largest underground metro station in the world: 230 by 50 meters on three floors. The second station where the Red Line and Green Line intersect is Khalid bin Al Waleed .

business

The red line operates from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, on Thursdays and Fridays until 1:00 a.m. On Friday mornings there is no traffic. The total travel time from terminus to terminus is 66 minutes.

future

An extension of the Red Line from Jebel Ali to the border of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is being considered. Since Abu Dhabi is planning a comparable metro system, this opens up the possibility of continuous traffic.

In April 2015, the extension of the line at both ends was announced. It should also develop the area in which the world exhibition (Dubai Expo 2020 ) is to take place in 2020 . On June 29, 2016, the RTA awarded the contract for the branch of the Red Line between the Nakheel Harbor & Tower and the Expo 2020 station. The contract was won by the Expolink consortium consisting of Acciona (Spain) / Gülermak (Turkey) / Alstom (France) for a price of $ 2.9 billion (AED 10.6 billion). Trains and the electro-mechanical systems are supplied by Alstom, Acciona and Gülermak are building the line, and Thales is providing the train and signaling technology. The four other applicants for the project were: Nurol (Turkey) / Astaldi (Italy) / Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) (Spain), Mapa Gunal (Turkey) / China Railway Group (China) / CSR Corporation (China), Orascom (Egypt), Yapi Mercezi (Turkey), GS Engineering & Construction (South Korea) / Siemens (Germany), and Ōbayashi / CCC (Greece) / Mitsubishi (Japan).

The new section is 15 km long, starting with a branch from the Red Line at Nakheel Harbor & Tower Station. 11.8 km are planned above ground as a viaduct with five stations, two more stations in the 3.2 km long tunnel section. The (above-ground) terminus is on the Expo 2020 site. The new route is to be served with 15 new trains (another 35 trains will strengthen the fleet on the existing lines). For the Expo, a passenger volume of 35,000 people on working days and 47,000 on weekends is expected, which should be around 20% of the Expo visitors. 23,000 passengers per hour and direction can be transported on the new route. The route is scheduled to open on May 20, 2020, five months before the start of the expo. The route will later be extended to Dubai-World Central International Airport (Al Maktoum International Airport).
