The Dubai Mall shopping center in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is one of the largest shopping centers in the world in terms of sales area with 350,000 square meters. It is located in the Downtown Dubai district , about 800 meters south of central Sheik Zayed Road .

overview

The Dubai Mall opened on November 4th, 2008 with an initial 600 stores and when it is completed it will house 1200 stores that are expected to attract 37 million visitors a year. However, this goal was not achieved in the first year with around 30 million visitors. Initially, 14,000 parking spaces were built, and a later expansion is planned.

The Dubai Mall has been accessible by public transport since January 2010 via the Dubai Metro station, which is 800 meters away . The connection between the mall and the "Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall" station has been established since December 2012 by an air-conditioned gangway equipped with roller conveyors (so-called Metro Link). There is also a feeder bus, which has played a subordinate role since the Metro Link opened.

The shopping center also has 120 restaurants as well as the largest gold souk in the world with 220 shops, an artificial ice rink with Olympic and ice hockey dimensions , a music- controlled fountain , a 24-meter-high water cascade , a hall for fashion shows, a multiplex cinema with 22 Halls, a presentation center for computer games, and a supervised children's adventure land.

The tunnel leading under the aquarium

Another attraction of the Dubai Mall is the aquarium , which extends over three floors . The largest pool has a footprint of 51 × 20 meters and is 11 meters high. In the largest pool, made of 75 centimeters thick acrylic glass , there are 10,000 cubic meters of lake water taken from the Persian Gulf, 33,000 sea animals and fish, etc. a. Multiple species of sharks, perch, rays and other reef dwellers. Crocodiles, giant crabs but also seals and penguins can be found in other smaller tanks. A narrow pedestrian tunnel two meters high runs through the lower basin, the walls of which are only 19 centimeters thick, which is used to reproduce the natural size of the animals. Since no natural light penetrates the pool, it has a lighting system with control for day and night simulation; also via automatic feeders and a water-saving water circulation and cleaning technology, the water is kept germ-free with ozone. All built-in and real-looking rock and coral objects are made of plastic so that the water quality is always under control. The water temperature is kept constant at 24 degrees Celsius. On February 25, 2010 the aquarium and the surrounding shops had to be closed for a few hours after a crack in the acrylic glass because of the leaking water, animals were not harmed. The Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Center received the Guinness World Record for the largest acrylic sheet.

The Dubai Mall, planned by Emaar Properties , is part of the Downtown Dubai project, which includes a large number of apartment and office buildings, numerous hotels and a newly built district that is supposed to give the impression of an Arab old town , a water basin landscape with the world's largest fountain and The center of the world tallest skyscraper is Burj Khalifa . There is a direct walking connection from the Dubai Mall, which also has access to the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa.
