Nakheel Properties ( Arabic نخيل nachil , DMG naḫīl 'Palmen') is a state-owned project development and real estate company in Dubai , United Arab Emirates , which develops and manages various economic activities on behalf of the government of the Emirate of Dubai.
Several offshore projects including Palm Islands , the Dubai Waterfront , The World and The Universe are overseen by Nakheel. In addition, with the construction of the Nakheel Tower , Nakheel planned a super-high skyscraper that would reach a height of over a kilometer and become the largest building in the world. At the height of the construction boom in Dubai, the aim was to surpass rival Emaar Properties and its record high-rise Burj Khalifa . However, the project was abandoned in December 2009 due to financial problems.
Completed real estate projects also include The Gardens , Dubai International City , Jumeirah Islands and the Jumeirah Lake Towers adjacent to the Dubai Marina . The shopping projects include the Chinese Dragon-Mart in International City and the Ibn Battuta Mall .
Nakheel Properties initially operated under the umbrella of the state-financed investment company Dubai World , but was also largely responsible for its payment difficulties at the end of 2009 and was taken over by the state of Dubai in mid-2011.
The executive chairman of Nakheel was initially Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. Since March 2011 Ali Rashid Ahmad Lootah has taken on the position alongside his Vice-Chair of Mashreq Bank.
