Bernhard Knubel

Bernhard Knubel (born March 2, 1938 in Brotdorf , † February 23, 1973 in Gelsenkirchen ) was a rower from the Federal Republic of Germany, who became an Olympic champion in a two-man team in 1960 .

Life

Bernhard Knubel was born in Saarland, grew up in Petershagen and went to school in Minden . After initially playing handball , he was discovered for rowing in 1953 and started for the Minden rowing club . In 1955 the all-round athlete was also a district forest runner. For family reasons, Knubel moved to Gelsenkirchen a little later and from then on started for the Gelsenkirchen rowing club . There he met the multiple German champion Heinz Renneberg , with whom he finished third in the German championship in two-man without a helmsman in 1959 . In a pair with helmsman, he won the all-German Olympic qualification together with Renneberg and helmsman Klaus Zerta .

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the regattas took place on Lake Albano . The German boat won the lead in 7: 31.64 minutes. In the final, the boat won in 7: 29.14 with just under a second ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union.

For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf .

With a height of 1.97 m, Knubel's competition weight was 90 kg. At the age of 34 he died of cancer in Gelsenkirchen. A street in Petershagen is named after him. Minden calls him the only gold medalist in town.
